We recently purchased a Seagate Blackarmour NAS 400 and installed two new WD Raptor 300gb drives. We have set the drive up as JBOD/SPAN. We moved across aot of files and have set the the drive up accordingly. We would like to add two more drives. I would like to know if we add the two new drives, will it erase the data thats on the two HDD that are currently installed? or will it just add them to the JBOD/SPAN without erasing the data?

I would not recommend making this change without ensuring data is safe. easier said than done with these NAS systems as it requires equal storage space to backup the content...

JBOD systems offers the least risk to expand and can be done in less time than a real RAID config as the parity is none existent here so I would not expect issues, but never say never...

yes it is possible, but prefered method is backing up anayway...
 
Thanks we do have backups of everything, but to copy everything back will take time. Have also e-mailed the seagate tch support...so maybe hopefully they will respond.
 
Been doing a lot of research on the BlackArmor NAS and from what I have read you should be able to insert the two new drives and everything will copy across from the pool which already exists. But always good to have backups just in case.

Was wondering, what desktop environment is the NAS connected to in your case? I ask because the company I work for has asked me to look at getting a NAS and the 440 has come up many times. We run a Ubuntu environment and we want to make sure that the NAS runs perfectly with that.

Re the 400: only a couple of Seagate drives are certified hot-swappable, so adding new drives might introduce some unwanted complications ...

Also, the reviews on the Seagate website's product page are less than stellar :(
