Seagate drives in Truenas

Hi guys

I lost a HDD last night. Busy looking at replacement options.

Does anyone know these 2 drive/models?
Does anyone know the controller: ServeRAID M1015 (in LSI9211-8i in IT mode),

Can find these 2 drives : ST10000NM002G for pretty much the same price as: Seagate Ironwolf Pro ST8000NE001

For me it makes most sense to go with the 10Tb Option, can someone comment on compatibility.

It is a very common, very reliable SAS controller, LSI 9211.
They are cheap on eBay because there are so many from old servers.
They are super reliable, super widely used.

Did you buy this thing because it is strange you wouldn't know anything about your NAS?

That SAS controller is running in JBOD mode clearly (IT mode), which is the way it should be, it is not applying any raid logic, it is simply working like a normal SAS/SATA controller and allowing the OS to see the drives directly.

So to be clear, the controller is not implementing any raid, it is just being used as a plain SAS controller and TrueNAS is applying the "raid" logic in software
That is the best way to run it. RAID isn't reliable, TrueNAS uses RAID-Z which is significantly better than any hardware raid controller.

Things may have changed recently but it will use the size of the smallest disk.

Again did you get this server or something? Because you seem somewhat uninformed about how this works.
You don't need to buy the same kind of drive (or brand), you can mix and match drives. As long as the new disks have the same or larger size.

I know what the controller does, know it's running pass through, I refreshed it myself...
I was simply asking not sure about the 6Gb/s 12 Gb/s comment/spsecs made on a Ironwood drive... knowing my current drives are Sata and are 6Gb and here had a 12Gb Sata drive advertised, not knowing it... or connection point... (fact was it was not a new standard, it was a incorrectly labelled item)

I know the controller RAID is disabled... the refresh did that, and I'm using ZFS to accomplish that.

My uninformed view is I'm asking specific question, I'm not laying the entire picture out as thats not the info I wanted... I'm actually much more informed than what you're thinking.

I've been running some Seagate Exos drives (the 14TB SAS variant) in my TrueNAS box for just over two years.

Cannot say I've had the best experience as I've had 2 of the 4 disks fail - one last year and one this month. That's the thing with drives though, you just never know when you're going to get good ones and when you'll get bad ones no matter the brand or type you buy.
