Seagate Freeagent 1TB - broken

Some insight into this just for interests' sake:

'buzz buzz buzz' doesn't help really...

does it go on?
can you hear the platters spin/heads moving?
does it click?

the bios should have picked it up, yeah - freezer trick works on clicking drives - not sure if that's going to help you....

Buzz buzz buzz is the motor trying to spin up and failing. The drive's motor has either seized or it suffered from stiction
If the drive won't spin up the head assembly won't unload so you won't hear any other noises.

Stiction is relatively easy to fix in the right environment. Seized motor - big, expensive job.

And be careful with the 'freezer' trick. What happens is that you put the drive in the freezer, the moisture in the air inside the drive casing condenses on the platters and you can imagine what that does. Water spots on a platter are not good, so avoid the freezer stunt unless you're looking for a new ice brick.

Try sticking a different drive into the case?

Possibly you can use the case with a different drive and in this way save some money as you only need to get a new internal drive?

If you bought the drive from a supplier that brought the drive in legitimately from Seagate then that importer has to recognise the Seagate warranty. which for those drives are 2 years.

The problem is you opened the case :/ so don't know if they will warranty swop.

Had two of those external drives go "fooked" on me. One I was able to swop out under warranty from the place where I bought it (Computers Only)

The second one died not too long after that. I opened the box only to find that they have encased the whole drive in another metal box :wtf: Surely that adds to the heat build up??

I was able to use the sata interface card and power assembly. I am now using that with a normal internal drive - as a external (if that makes sense to you all )

The long and short of it all - Don't trust the Seagate FreeAgent external hard drives!!
