Seagate Hard Drive Problem

Ok, firstly I have tried a motherboard bios update and Seagate firmware update, both the updates worked but did not solve the problem.

Yesterday I formatted my 500GB Seagate Baracuda 7200.11 SATA hard drive, I then proceded to re-install windows xp which failed, it gave a blue screen error.

Then I tried Windows 7 and when I tried to create a new partition it gave the error:

"Failed to create a new partition on the selected unused space. [Error: 0x8007045d]"

I have tried every MBR / Partiton rebuild / restore application, and none of them work, giving a disk read/write error.

I have also tried recovery from windows xp cd and CHKDSK /r all I get is: "The specified drive is not valid, or there is no disk in the drive."

Anyone have any ideas on the problem, and solutions?

Why not, have you never tried anything adventurous? My data is lost and I need to recover it, if the platters are OK then Yeah its possible. If it fails I can at least say I tried. At least I have the brains and expertise to try it!

but if you do get that far, try switching it on with the cover open! very cool indeed.

edit: oh, and NO - you DON'T have the expertise to TRY it. trust me. leave it to the pro's rather...
 
have you considered that its not related to your mobo bios or hard drive? perhaps ram or the actual mobo is faulty?

Have you tried to recover the data by running the drive on another pc ?

So who want to pay a SA "pro" R3000.00 deposit, no guarantees, just to try a format on the drive and then tell you sorry sir we did not manage to get the data but we would like to still cash in! No deposit return.
Seagate does it via "No data No pay". That would be an option but not local. They will give me a new drive and say "Bye Bye" data. So for a meager R1200.00 loss it's for me worth the effort. I am an electronics tech and have done many things, not yet exchage drive heads but I have many old drives to practise on.

Why switch on with cover open? Wont that effect the head air cushion and mabe even crash it.
 
Try removing all of the partitions, doing a low level format with the Seagate low level format tool and then reinstall windows and let windows create the partition. I had a similar problem when I created a partition and moved my data onto it first. Then I tried to install windows afterwards. Windows does not like that for some reason.
 
i HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS
Error 7 and 14 occurs....

Me use win 95 disk to erase partitions, then use 98..... then created a dos partition then it pick up under windows xp....

Nope! Other drives works fine. I build computers for a living and can id when a drive failed!

i'm not saying it's recommended to do it, but when you've realised you've failed, why not :p or just watch this

AFAIK some places do only charge if they are able to restore your data...look around if it's important.

i was in the EXACT same position as you were in, LOL
i blew up my hdd
swapping platters

have FUN! :p

Yeah, for me its a case of I need that data. When I checked the backup drive the backup portion of the most important data was only 450 meg instead of 15+ Gig. Damn Windows. My fault as I last did a proper ghost backup too long ago. :o (Kick my own a$$ ...again):o I never pratice what I preach.

Tell me why you need a clean room? I want to recover data and then scrap the drive. Not repair it for reuse. I bought a new drive specifically to do the recovery, then afterwards I will scrap that too. But then I thought I would rather just try and find another old one first. If not possible soon it is bye bye new drive too. If I then still have not recovered any data it will be a totall loss of R1200.00 plus my time. Very cheap for very valuable experience, there are people out there smoking and drinking more than that in a single month.

An opened drive will degenerate slowly, if ever, if a few particles of micro dust entered. Did you know that there is special chambers and filters in a drive to catch internal "dust" and unwanted particles anyway?

Then again if I wanted to waste time I can use a enclosed sealed box with vacuum cleaner and filters to make a clean box to work in. But why? I never want to use the drive again after the data is recovered.

I have considered this and have run scans on the RAM and mobo, they both come out fine, I have tried an IDE drive in there and that works, but I don't have any other SATA drives to try.

Unfortunately I don't have another PC with SATA, just my laptop. So I will either have to try it in another PC later or return it (which I'm a bit worried about - I got it from incredible connection, yes bad I know - but I had a voucher, I'm even scared to know their return policy :confused: They will probably charge me more than it cost to exchange).
