Seagate or WD

Most of the market is good as long as you avoid Seagate.

I think Seagate had an unfortunate past, and the stigma persists.

However I think today you can’t really go wrong with eithier. You can check backblaze.com for reliability statistics.

That being said, it’s still a HDD.

I just wish SSDs would get cheaper so we could move away from the dreaded HDD.

I would personally go with which ever is cheaper.

Regarding Seagate: They're mostly discontinued now, but I've still seen one or two sellers still stocking them. Avoid Seagate drives with part numbers ending in DM000 and DM001, especially DM001, they were complete duds and had a ridiculously high failure rate. Something like 25% in the first year.

I would personally go with a Toshiba 3.5" desktop drive with an external caddy.

Most 2.5" drives arnt reliable, small parts, can be easily knocked over.

And 3.5" normally have a longer warranty.

Much of a muchness, they both have 2 year warranty so I'd go with whichever one you think looks nicer.

Also try to keep your most important files/documents in a cloud backup too if that's viable for you.

Oof, I got hit with a batch of the 3TB units. 3 drives failed in the course of a month.
