Seagate unveils 10TB hard drive

Thats probably gonna cost a pretty penny... specially with the helium filled casing...
 
As UHD becomes the standard , i can imagine this becoming useful when downloading movies and series.

i remember a time when a 500mb drive was more than one needed to store data.

H.265 comes a long way to solving the huge 4k file issue. 10tb is a hell of a lot to lose, should a drive fail. Not sure this is a solution to media storage.

This gives a good basic idea of what sorts of benefits H.265 can offer compared to H.264. While it’s not hitting 50% bandwidth savings in most cases, it’s close — quantizer 24 is 57% the size, q=30 is 59%, and q=40 is just 47%. Granted, at a quantizer of 40, the final output is wretched — but it’s wretched at less than half the bandwidth.

I guess the helium cost is offset by making the drive storage larger in per GB cost terms, but without knowing pricing I'm just guessing.
 
Great that it comes in SAS as well. Wish they'd use it to replace the unreliable SATA interface in desktops.

Screw enterprise. I want a 10TB Seagate Barracuda.

No need for redundant drives when you can get unlimited online backup from CrashPlan for relatively cheap.

You tried to sound pro, but you failed.

Mechanical is still very much in use today.
You only really need SSD for your Primary drive (OS, Software, select Steam games). Using SSD for storage is dumb.

SSD is designed for speed, not capacity.

Wait. You're going to *download* a bunch of uhm linux ISOs, then *upload* them to an online backup site to ensure that you can *download* them again if need be (disk crash)....and spend extra money for this approach?

Throw all that out the window, get a fast internet link, a 512gb SSD and download & delete after watching. SA isn't a internet starved country any more...no need to hoard the bits for a rainy day.

I'm currently waiting on a 100Mbps fibre home installation. Ordered it a month ago. Shouldn't be much longer.
