Ok so anyone have more info on this latest offering from DSTV?
If I understand correctly you hook up another DSTV decoder to your existing one pay R55 extra a month and then you have 2 decoders, but each one can watch what they want?
Doesn't really make sense, because then you could just give someone a second decoder and then dstv lose moola because instead of getting full subscription they only get R55? unless you also have to pay more a month subsciption fees, but I don't think thats the case?
Can both decoders watch the same channel - say I'm watching BBC food, which is the only reason really to have DSTV and then the person viewing the other decoder also wants to watch BBC food can they?
And then aren’t these decoders like have a limited life (until HDTV), so is this just a ploy by DSTV to get rid of all old style decoder stock, and then in a few months when they go digital HDTV, its ahh like sorry, you need to buy two digital decoders and the new models don't support that feature so now you need to buy 2 subscriptions?

The decoders must be on the same cable. The primary sends out a signal to the secondary. If you remove the primary the secondary stops decoding.
AFAIK it is the same as dual view so you can watch whatever you want on either decoder.

Yep. They call it the "heartbeat".

They also allow you to link a HD decoder with the normal one.

ok, so to my second question, is this just a ploy for dstv to offload and sell stock of analogue decoders before they come obsolete in 2010?

Analogue decoders? You mean those terrestrial Mnet Decoders. They've been phasing them out for years now havent they?

Apart from the older DSTV decoders not being HD how are they obsolete?
AFAIK it is the same as dual view so you can watch whatever you want on either decoder.
And apparently you can connect a second decoder to an older dual view PVR and watch a third channel. That could be handy in some houses.

Hi There

You seem to be confused with what digital and analogue tv is about.

Dstv is digital allready. What is going to change to digital is the normal aerial signal you receive on your normal tv via the tuner. You will need a decoder to decode the new digital signal via your aerial to your normal tv.

The other system you are talking about is multiview using two cheap decoders to view two diferent chan. in dif. rooms in same house.

yeh I do tend to get easily confused.
I thought all dstv decoders had to be changed as well for hdtv, so is this not the case?

No not at all , Digital tv will only involve normal televion sets with a normal tuner ie. signals received now on aerials is analogue and that is what is changing to digital.

So after Sentech changes over to Digital and you use an aerial to pick up 1 2 3 E Mnet Super Sport , then you wont be able to view the signal without a digital TV or Digital decoder.

It has nothing to do wit multichoice Dstv as they are allready digital.

However Dstv is now going HD high defenition on only some of there channels. And for that you need a HD decoder and HD tv.

My personal opinion is that it not worth the money. A 72cm 100hz television using a normal Dstv decoder is good enough for me.

Hope this makes sense?

Yes it does, ty, I was confusing hdtv with digital tv.
I suppose all channels will one day be in hdtv but I gather that day is still a while away?
