Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of trading in my Honda Ballade 150 (14 yrs old) and getting a second hand BMW. I've been looking around on auto trader etc and they have 2004/2005 model BMW 318i's for roughly R100k. Has anyone bought or have expeirence with second hand BMW's that could shed some light on weather it's a good idea or what problems I may excounter.

Thanks

spelling broer...please:D

Question you need to ask yourself is what is the mileage on this vehicle...if its over 100 000km it falls outside of the Motorplan and might cost an arm and a leg once it comes to its service interval. Although the idea of a Beemer sounds cool I definitely wouldn't want to be sitting with premium car that's not covered by some sort of service plan.

get another honda man i am sure you current one didnt give too many issues. Those engines are practically bullet proof

one of the fellows in my team bought a 318i (e36) with 165k km on the clock, and now has 219k km, according to him appart from normal wear and tear items, he only had big issues with the clutch (twice), one or other sensor and some of electronics...

...he says services can be expensive and thats with him taking it to a backyard mechanic

so although bmw looks nice, i would agree with catweasel and buy another honda

You can extend the motorplan when you buy it, so if you really want a second hand BMW, buy it from a dealer, and buy the extended motorplan with the vehicle

Beamer ;)

I've been driving one for almost 3 years now, and besides from normal wear and tear, like wheel bearings, brakes, etc, not much issues except: my expansion tank burst, but that's about R1500 to replace. Something that should be done every 5 years or so. ANd my electric windows winders. That is a known weak area on the E46. As for services, you don't have to take it to a dealer. Take it to any service station that can stamp your service booklet, and you'll find the cost is the same as for a Nissan or Fiat. Only thing is, the spark plugs are expensive. The service interval for the petrol models is 25,000kms, which is a lot, but I take mine in anywhere between 18-20,000kms.
