Hi all

I'm looking to buy a new Android phone. When my MTN contract ends in about 2 months, I want to go the prepaid route. I currently have a Motorola Defy, witch is a nice phone but ageing (running Cyanogenmod 7.2 = Android 2.3.7).

I don't want to spend much more than 4k. I'm comfortable going the second hand route if the phone is not older than a few months and has no damage and all accessories. There are many Samsung Galaxy S3's on Gumtree in the R3.5k-3.8k region, some still sealed. My issue with the S3 is that it only has 1GB ram, which might be a limiting factor in a year or two. The 512MB Ram on my current phone is the main reason why Cyanogenmod 9/10 doesn't run well.

Alternatively I can try to get the Nexus 4 (2GB Ram) from Esquire. First issue is that they only keep stock in Midrand, while I'm in Cape Town. Secondly, it's a little more expensive than I'd like it to be (the 8GB version). Thirdly, 8GB storage on a phone without a SD card slot sound like a bad idea.

It's basically a certainty that the phone will get the Cyanogenmod treatment, so only hardware vs price is a concern.

Any insights or suggestions? Should I look at other phones?

Can't recall if my GNex was 8GB or 16GB right now, but either way it treated me just fine.

But I understand your apprehension.

Check out the classifieds here or on carbonite too.
Loads of good Droids going there for decent prices - of course you can negotiate too :)

You'd wanna try and get something a bit more up to date than an S3 - not that its by any means a slouch.

Good luck.

New Nexus 4 vs second hand S3? I would pick the Nexus.

Second hand Nexus4 VS second hand S3? I would pick the S3 mainly because of its removable battery.
