Who of you have bought a second hand mac? Would you do it again? How has the experience been?

Bought plenty. Usually they work great. Macs are very well constructed, very reliable and age gracefully. The resale value really holds up. Of course they can break, just like any PC. It's a tradeoff, but the price of new Macs, especially in this country, mean that it's worth it IMO.

I bought my pre-unibody MBP second hand, and I couldn't be happier. That said, I bought it from a colleague who I know took good care of it (and it was pretty new, he just didn't like OS X much).

I'll echo this. Mine is nearly four years old, I am pretty hard on my kit. I'm clumsy as hell. I've dropped my MBP, sat on it, stepped on it, slammed it in the revolving door in our office (about once or twice a month, actually), spilled cider on it, spilled beer on it, spilled wine on it, spilled coffee on it (several times). Of all the spilling, the keyboard back-light is a bit dim on the one side of the keyboard, but that's it. The only visible damage is a dent underneath the express-card slot. Other than that, it looks just looks like a 2nd hand laptop in good condition.

Shame dude, I Think she needs some TLC;)

It's good to hear they are strong.
I'm thinking of donating my unibody 2010 macbook to my sister when she starts varsity next year.

Did all of this happen after consumption of the beer, cider & wine? :D

rofl :D

Sold 3 macs now, 1 ppc two intel. Haven't heard a word from the buyers so i guess they're really happy?

Yea, I know macs usually hold their value quite well. The reason I'm asking is because I might have to sell my 2008 20" iMac to get a MBP. If I didn't have to get the laptop...uhm, agga I mean notebook, I probably could still use this machine for another 2 years.

I would be happy if I could get R6000 for it but that's going to be negotiable. What'd y'all think?

i am a complete nube now with apple since i got the ipad2 and i must say i am now hooked and want to "i" my whole house now from pc to tv viewing to media streaming wireless everything, so i suppose a mac desktop is the place to start, but expensive so second hand for me as well.

Start out with a mac mini, 2nd hand can go for around 3K.

Haven't seen too many Mac Mini's for sale, but do try, they're nice machines.
