Hi guys!

At the moment I am looking into buying a second hand smartphone. Either the Samsung Galaxy S or the S2. So I've been browsing forums and classifieds and etc and I wanted to know, when looking at a second hand device, how do you know if it's stolen or not?

Is there some sort of way to check whether or not it's just purely a second hand phone or if it's some bum trying to make a quick buck by taking me for a fool?

See if it comes with all the original accessories that were in the box. Thieves generally don't get those when they steal the phone.
Even better if you get the original box but not everyone keeps those.

Ask for imei & check with saps or service providers if reported stolen.

Inserting a SIM will immediately reveal if it's been reported lost/stolen as it'll be blacklisted!

Original box (check IMEI on box matches handset), charger & manual are good to verify if things are legitimate.

Failing this the original invoice or delivery note.

Get a bill of sale from the seller with their ID number & details of the handset. You may want to draft your own 'form' and take it with you. Add a statement saying that it is their property and there is no legal reason why they can not sell the handset. At least you have covered yourself should it ever turn out to be stolen.

Bloodstains.

No joke, my brother's pants after getting mugged for his phone:
