Second ISP account on ADSL line

I'm pretty new to ADSL connections and have a couple of questions that I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can probably answer off the top of their head. My situation is this:

I rent a garden cottage and the landlord has been kind enough to include an Internet connection in the cottage (an Ethernet connection off their home ADSL account). This is fine for low volume task like checking emails and a bit of surfing but I can't use it for say downloading CD images or large software updates as it would then start eating into their monthly GB limit and could cause them to hit their cap.

Is there a way I can set up my own account with an ISP (like a pay as you go account with webafrica) and connect directly to it when I want to do large downloads so that I'm using their ASDL line but not going through their ISP and using any of their GB limit (they mainly use the Internet during the day and I mainly use it at night anyway)?

From what I've read this could be done with a PPPoE connection if their ADSL modem was in bridge mode, but really I want a solution that doesn't impact on them and mean they have to change their existing system to accommodate me.

Any suggestions?

You need control of the router/modem if you want to achieve your objective.

Welcome to the MyADSL Forums! :D

MozamPete, You need to check with them where that Ethernet connection of yours leads to...If it leads directly to their ADSL Router, You could maybe just try setting up a PPPOE connection with the Telkom Guest account ([email protected]:guest) just to see if it will work. Maybe you strike it lucky, because if that works, you can just get yourself an account and use that without eating away at their gigs :)

It should work if the router is setup for bridged mode.

If not, ask the landlord politely, explaining to him what you want to do.

And also you must take care not to flood their line with your downloads, be considerate and throttle your downloads.

But am I correct that if the router is in bridge mode then:
1. You loose the firewall effect the NAT provided for unsolicited incoming packets.
2. If the landlord uses more that one computer (which they do as they run a small business from home) then their IPS needs to provide a separate public IP address for each of their machines (do ISPs in SA normally do this without extra cost?)

As an alternative if they are using a separate ADSL modem and Router (and I don't know if they do), is it possible to put a switch between the modem and the router and install two routers on the one ADSL line and have each router connecting to a different ISP?

ld13,

Apologies for misspelling you name.

Another question:
Once a router is in bridge mode what is it doing if it is not doing NAT?
If you are going to use PPPoE do you need a router at all? Why not just connect the client PCs to the ADSL modem via a switch?
