Durban – KwaZulu-Natal police are on the hunt for a man who shot and killed an off-duty police officer from Isipingo, south of Durban.
Constable Sibongiseni Mnguni was killed on Sunday while he was sitting in his VW Polo at the intersection of Parsadh and Sayan roads. Spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the officer was approached by the suspect, who then shot him in the head.
"He was rushed to hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The suspect fled the scene on foot. A case of murder was opened at Isipingo police station for further investigation and no arrests have been made. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage," he said in a statement.
Mnguni was the second officer from KwaZulu-Natal to be killed in less than a week. Constable Nkunzi Manyanga from Mbazwana, near Sodwana Bay, and a private security guard were shot and killed on Wednesday when a suspected hijacker opened fire on them, before fleeing in a police vehicle.
The officer, accompanied by private security officers and members of the community, was acting on information that a suspect wanted on three counts of carjacking, had been seen in the area.
The group went to the Vimbukhalo area at about 23:15, where the suspect was hiding. When they approached the suspect’s house, he opened fire on the group, fatally wounding the 28-year-old police official and a 40-year-old security officer.
The police officer was shot in the head and neck and died on the scene. The suspect then took their three firearms and fled in the police vehicle. The burnt out vehicle was later found 10km away from the crime scene.
Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, strongly condemned both the killings.
"I want to send condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Constable Sibongiseni Mnguni who was shot and killed… while off duty. It is sad to report that Constable Mnguni is the second police officer killed in less than a week in the province. The Hawks have been tasked to investigate these two incidents," she said.
Mguni’s death brings the number of police officers killed over the weekend to two. The body of Captain Kenneth Poortman, 47, was discovered on the Mabopane highway in Gauteng. It is believed he was hijacked while he was off-duty and in his private car. He had stab wounds and his firearm was missing.
Two people were arrested in connection with the crime. Poortman's car and gun were recovered. Police did not rule out the possibility of more arrests.
