Looking for a secondhand car and was wondering if its worth waiting for the new year to kick in before making the purchase as the car will be a year older from the book value perspective or would it not make much of a difference. Have anyone looked at this in the past?

I don't think it makes much of a difference. The book value only really comes into play when you're trading in your car. The actual price you'll pay for a secondhand car at a dealership is based on supply and demand. High-demand cars will often be sold for far more than the book value.

A car loses 1% of the ”new car price” per month, according to the “book”.

in your situation, the seller won’t drop his price in January unless he is desperate to sell the car, which obviously means there’s something wrong with it.

I would presume that generally in January the demand for cars may drop due to other financial burdens which occur at beginning of year, this means prices might fall due to sellers wanting to meet buyers halfway. its just a generalisation, if its true then waiting till Jan might be worth while
