Something I just heard on this weeks security now, is if you log on to gmail with https://mail.google.com/mail/
it stays secure during your session whereas http://mail.google.com/mail/ is only secure on log on.

This is true, I use it to keep the Grim Poisonous Ivyness Creeper out of my GMails .

Well this sounds interesting! Now please can you tell me if there is any problem if I access my Gmail account from the Gtalk software? Actually that is what I do now as it immediately intimates me of any new mails. Moreover I did not have this knowledge that login in from different urls has differences in security levels.

And according to the show it's always secure if you're using pop3.

When you login to GMail [from a browser] using http://mail.google.com/mail/ your GMail username and password are still securely authenticated but AJAX data transferred between your browser and GMail is not encrypted once logged in, however using https://mail.google.com/mail/ should cause AJAX data transferred between browser and GMail to be encrypted...

if you're using firefox, there's a nice little extension, customizegoogle, which will make sure you are always logging on securely
