OK, so I've seen a few messages on the fact that the modem can be hacked... can anyone provide a checklist of things to do to secure your modem (port change, password change, etc)?

Hi Preycor [:0]

Have you considered purchasing a hardware appliance like AlphaShield to protect you network from attack via the ADSL connection.

It is one of the most effective means of protection and is hassle free.

Few things to check:

Don't allow remote management
Change the default password
Don't allow a DMZ (de militarised zone) unless you know exactly what you are doing
Don't allow port forwarding unless you know what you are doing

Don't ever give out your username and password - not even to the Telkom techies at the support numbers.

1. Change the default root/admin password
2. Delete the telnet users
