all of a sudden i get a spyware thing on my pc which says MS SPYWARE 2009 and that it has expired.

i now have a little red shield and this tells me i have a spyware infection.

what can be done about this?

You have a worm.
This worm is going to try to trick you into purchasing fake anti-spyware software.

No punishment for the company which wrote the buggy software to begin with?
Not like this is a common occurrence on Linux or OSX boxes.

the weirds thing happened with that red shield thing. when i right clicked on the task manager and brought up the window i then right clicked on the red shield and it gave me a kind of religious message or something. it was on for about a second so could not memorise what it said but it was almost like a little passage of writing.

i am at a loss as to what it was.

You have to completely remove it. A normal uninstall won't help. It is malware. There are a number of these bully programs that infect your system and try to get you to buy their junk software which is also malware. Whatever you do, do not give it any personal info. You need to remove it as soon as possible using trustworthy and reliable tools. Read through those links I gave you and also Google "ms spyware removal".
