I'm busy setting up a couple of cameras at home. Can anyone recommend what software to use? It should be able to handle more than one camera and save video and photo's to disk.

Is the software interchangeable between DVR units?
We used a package called fscommand that came with our DVR unit.
It looks like the package is generic though.
I can upload it somewhere for you if you want.

The best option for under 8 cams on Windows is the free version of Milestone. Works with almost any brand of cam.

Milestone Xprotect Go. You have to re-register every year but its worth it

Zoneminder looks cool, pity it's only Linux based.

So far WebcamXP and Milestone Xprotect Go looks very cool. Xprotect looks like a better product, but WebcamXP has a very easy remote viewing setup (through any browser). With Xprotect you need the client running on another pc and I'm guessing it's not going to work over the internet.

If you want to get stuff working over the internet just install Logmein Hamachi (The free unmanaged version).

Yeah I know, but I'll still need the client software and when I connect from my work laptop, I'll need to setup routes as well for the work network, otherwise all traffic will default through the vpn. I also won't be able to view the cameras from my iphone / ipad etc.

I've gone the analog route (8 cameras) with one of these stand alone DVR's:

wired to a TP-LINK MR3420 router and working with a ZTE-MF190 3G modem using the Cell C "unrestricted" APN for inbound access.

Preferred the stand alone DVR option, so I don't have the PC running all the time.
Features mobile phone view (MEye) and browser based live and playback management from my Laptop.
Also have a single IP cam connected over Wifi through the router and viewable from phone and laptop browser. (No recording though)

Fairly happy with the solution and performance so far.
