Not sure if this is supposed to be here or not.... BUT
I need to setup a security system , I've been reading alot about IP vs analogue etc and it seems that IP offers better quality. The setup is not an average one Looking at an approximate installation of +/- 32 cameras, as well as intercoms, external IR beams and possibly some PTZ cameras as well. Who would be the best to get the equipment from and can anyone of you offer some advice?
Some questions I have:
Are IP cameras the better option? In terms of quality, longevity and installation?
Do IP cameras also need a dedicated PC or DVR? or will just about any PC be enough?
Can one start with a few cameras and build on or does it work like an analogue system where the DVR is limited to the number of channels ie 16ch systems etc?
what are the resolutions of the IP cameras, do they also use PAL/NTSC does fps matter on the camera or PC?

Any other tips you guys may deem useful?

dont know much about installing them, i do know IP cams are expensive, but on the up side can run of CAT5 or Wifi.

My suggestion is to register with this company : www.illuder.com

they are ZA based.

To cut a long story short.

Depending on your needs, I would go for an analog system instead of an IP one. Purely based on cost and features. To warrant the price difference on these cameras you would have to really need the camera to encode the signal, and be able to access them wirelessly.

Analog cameras can be viewed via a router so remote access would not justify the price difference. Also the IP camera would use up more BW when viewing it remotely via the net.

you are talking about many many variables here. I have been working with analog & IP systems for years( IP cams years before they were popular) and every system has it place dependant on transmission(cable, wireless, length etc), quality requirements, compression, channels, end user requirment etc

IP cams are great when you look at low cost WiFi deployment vs highly expensive wireless for analog systems(especially PTZ)
IP cams really come in to effect when you look at Megapixel & full HD. very pricey but can replace several analog cams dependant on your environment.
Analog camera's come in a much wider variety and lower cost. they generally deal with difficult environments better such as low light, or peak light, wide dynamic ranges, IR etc.
IP NVR recorders normally offer more options when it comes to amount of channels, upto 64ch +/- per server. Analog is generally no bigger than 32ch per server

Analog cams streaming res is dependant on the capturing device. standard stuff is CIF(352x288) @ +/- 12.5-25fps and more high end equipment is D1(704x576) @ 25fps.
IP cams should stream through 640x480 & 25/30fps min. Then you get MP & HD. The high end stuff can stream full HD @ 25fps!

If your talking about 32cams and integrated beams etc my advice is not try this on your own or just listen to one supplier. shoot me a pm with more info. i design this stuff for a living
