Hello all,

I spent some time in the UK about 10 years ago, and I remember noting something that I hadn't seen previously, in that cars which I thought were sedan shaped, actually had their boot lids hinged *above* the rear windshield, becoming effectively hatchbacks. The one that I definitely remember doing this was a Ford Mondeo (very popular there), and possibly a Renault, though I forget which one now.

Are there any vehicles like this available on the South African market at the moment? I prefer the additional boot-space afforded by a sedan, but I'm loathe to leave my hatchback's versatility behind, as I've used the big hatch to fit in bicycles, items of furniture and medium-sized appliances on numerous occasions, which a normal sedan wouldn't be able to do.

That's still a hatchback, all a hatchback is a car with a door that swings upwards to allow access to the boot.

Yeah, but if you compare the hatchback and sedan version of any given car, then the hatch has less boot space, while the sedan has a smaller boot opening.

In other words, I'd like a Jetta Hatch, instead of a Golf. If that makes any sense?
Consider this:

Car looks in the same form factor as a Jetta / Civic sedan / Mazda3 sedan, and yet has the boot hinge at the top of the windshield, it opens really wide.

I did not know that. Based on a quick Google search, you can get these as hatchbacks, I see some of them opening like the Mondeo above, but the ones I've seen have only had normal boots. Does anyone know if the hatch versions are available in South Africa? Same goes for the BMW GTs, haven't actually interacted with one yet though.

I had looked at station wagons, but they're comparatively uncommon here, and TBH I don't like the shape very much.

Sounds like you are describing a Sportback in Audi speak?

Thanks, this is a long one, may take a while to go through.

Aha! That's the sort of thing I'm looking for.

Audis / BMWs are a bit dear though. If anyone knows of something like this in a bit more of an affordable segment?
(Sorry, my knowledge of the car market at the moment is rather poor... it's been years since I've shopped!)

4 series:wtf:, A5, etc.

We use to have a lot of those before, not so many of them around these days, my all time favourite, the Nissan Sabre.
