'lo all,

I have a pretty beefy server in Germany which I was going to decommission at the end of the month. Since the uncapped solutions have started shaping/throttling my torrents and other downloads etc. I have had the idea to setup it up as a seedbox.

Would anybody be interested in this as a paid service? If so what cost, hdd space and bandwidth would you consider reasonable for a 384,512,4mb user?

To get around the IP ACL throttling I have a few ideas to get around that. Transfers could have the option to be encrypted etc. A authenticated http/https proxy could be an option too. These would come with root logins for those who are paranoid about privacy etc.

Hey, that sounds like a great idea.

For an idea of price / spec, I'm renting a Seedbox in France from Seedbox.cc for 3 Euros per month.
Comes with 10 GB HDD space, 1 FTP account, Transmission Remote Interface, web interface.
And I see, depending on seeds / contention, up to 1.5 megabytes/s (they say it's on their 100 megabit/s network).
I get about a solid 300 kilobytes/s FTP download speed with 4mb MWEB account.
And I totally love it!! :D It saved my life the other day when I needed to get a document home but forgot my flash drive.

Would be nice to see a locally rooted Seedbox solution get going! :)

ooh we've been down this road before with another forummer.

however what happens when the ISPs start to notice a number of downloads coming from a certain IP range?

I normally use e-mail or dropbox for this sorta stuff ;)

<elaborate> It was actually a 10 meg Flash file with images. Class project due end of the weekend. Tried email, it was like: Uuuuhm... no. :p Haven't heard of a dropbox. Seedbox got me sorted in 5 mins. </elaborate>

I have a few ideas to get around that, with an available IP pool and thinking of employing a form of double-flux DNS to get around DNS ACLs, packet mangling client to give the packeteers a run for their money. A direct PPTP/IPsec connection might not be a bad idea either. The solution would be local and thus aimed directly at the local ISPs shaping techniques. I will hopefully have it up and around Monday running depending on how busy I am this weekend.

I think it would be best to run it beta with 5 or so free accounts for a month or so. Obliviously interms of cost I must be able to cover my server and hosting costs. I will be using it myself anyhow.

The link is 100mb split to two tier-1 networks. The base boxes will start at: 10G with 200Gb bandwidth. Will update here when its up.

and?

I have a VPS that I use as a seedbox that I could share. This will be suitable for someone with a low cap, possibly a mobile connection. Cost could be arranged for any amount ranging from R275 per year to R715 per year, depending on disk usage (5GB to 13GB). Quarterly or half yearly payments could be agreed on, but I'll prefer yearly payments, since I'm paying for the VPS on a yearly basis. I'll allow for a few days of testing before expecting payment. Transfer limit 150GB to 390GB including ftp transfers. Currently I cannot enforce this, however if the server as a whole run out we both will have to suffer . Maybe later I could write a script that will enable bandwidth enforcement or at least monitoring. You'll get access to transmission for downloading torrents and ftp to grab them. No http or ssh access to the server. PM me if you are interested.
