Colleague of mine, her husband runs his own Tourism Magazine business - more details upon request - but they're wanting an app developed for it.

Please if either you can or know of anyone that does this kind of thing, drop me a PM and I'll put you in touch with them.

I don't know too much of their business - they can answer all you questions - I'll just put you in touch with the relevant people.

Please also have a little CV of sorts for me, ie: Any other apps in iTunes or Play Store you've built so that one can have a squizz at your handy work.

There's also an opening for a designer (Print Media) if you know of anyone qualified for that kind fo thing. More deets to follow.

Look forward to hearing from you.

I know you didn't mention it, but if you're looking for a Windows 8 or Windows Phone 7/8 dev then you can contact me.

Haha, you beat me to mentioning you :D, i can vouch for roguemat as being one of the many prominent Windows devs in our country :).

I do believe getting that mag out to all users who have made the switch to 7/8 will be a good idea :p.

Good luck to OP and keep us posted on any developments.

Thanks roguemat - I know that Win7/8 is your baby :)
But I think intially they'd like to target iOs and Android or perhaps just one initially.
Though - I could always put you in touch with them if you just wanted to touch base.

Ouch, they must have a lot of money to burn then. App developers charge a very much for very little

Obviously I reckon it'd come in at a great expense, but the thinking is that the funds they use to be major sponsor at Travel Indabas could be redirected towards this kind of project.

Same could be said of any industry. Electricians charge R400 for about 5 minutes work because of the callout fee. Doctors, plumbers, etc, etc.

Thank Yuu! ;-)

Have passed on your deets as well roguemat :)
Thanks :)

Poor comparison, developers don't do callouts else we would not be developers.

Anyway, spending R200K per platform for an APP is the norm and for what, so you and your mom can download it. You need to be a big corp with lots of clients to justify an app. I'm not talking about apps that are just a layer of your website, talking about full functional standalone apps. Just a simple app our guys just did thats still in BETA would have cost R65K by now if we outsourced it.

I know a lot of businesses get a shock when they get the quote for an app and often a mobile site would have been all they wanted, or could afford. When I left the digital agency scene a few months back, the standard quote was R250K per platform for a basic app and the mobile site version was 10% of that price.

very little is a very relative term... :) diamonds are tiny yet they cost a fortune...

so devs are diamonds? lol.
I heard they charge a lot, I've seen good stuff come from ZA, but on Android I've seen my fair share of iOS ports too.

To the OP, try get devs who know their thing when it comes to 'prettifying' apps. You don't wanna pay a fortune for half the comments in the Play Store to be:
- "Feels like an Apple port"
- "Use Holo design language"
- "This is Android, there are intents!"

Shucks, I guess that's why I'm learning Java for Android. That amount is my annual salary before tax

no company that would charge R250K for an app would even take the business to build mobile site if it only costs R25K. A mobile site will take at least 2 weeks, including some testing. Thats IF, the original site is build on a decent REST api. otherwise it could take a lot longer.

Ok yes, a terrible comparison. My point is that any industry can seem expensive.

lol. You really are going to the wrong companies then. It's sometimes valuable to find small companies or freelancers that know their stuff and don't have a whole company to fund. It's because of this that I would/have never charge/d anywhere close to that for even very complicated apps.

I would love to give examples, but obviously can't.

Those where the quotes to clients. App developers in Cape Town feel they can rip a big one in the clients. A large financial TV channel paid R2 million to get their South African app done (IOS, Android, BB, Win Mobile) and that is a rip off.
