hi all,

so i made a stupid move to Linux (Backtrack 4) WITHOUT check hardware support...uuugh needless to say what a epic bust! I have a gigabyte M1022E net book and it seems non of the hardware is supported, so I was wondering if anyone out there knows of a site where I can download drivers...I did google but did not really turn up useful sites.

Why did you "make a move" to Backtrack? Backtrack is *not* meant to be a regular desktop distro. It's very specific, the kernel is compiled to allow all sorts of funky network stuff (which might have all sorts of not-so-funky side effects for regular users).

What ^^ said.

Try something like Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora etc and you will probably have much better luck.

Erm, why are you installing a wireless hacking distribution? Get a general distribution.

Never heard of Backtrack, try the LiveCD of the distro of your choice before installing, to confirm whether or not all hardware works. I usually run a LiveCD, and put the OS under a fairly strenuous load for awhile, and if it holds up, install it.

For some reason, I would recommend Ubuntu :D, but they say that Mint is also good for starters. I've never used Mint, so I can't comment there.

Mint is awesome. It's a derivative of Ubuntu and really worth a try. I have been using LinuxMint for over a year on laptop & desktop.

I'm gonna recommend Arch Linux just to differ from the constant "HERP HERP UBUNTU MINT DERP!" comments :p

What specifically is not working? The thing about Linux, I've found is: a little scratching, lots of stuff works.
From what I found on the Gigabyte site for the M102CC, this is basically a first generation Atom (N2x0, 945GSE), so the basic hardware support should work out of the box.
Wlan / webcam /etc may not work out of the box. WLAN is usually easy to fix, if you can found out what chipset it is (ralink, realtek, etc).

Perhaps test Linux OS's from a USB stick next time :p
