self alignment of DSTV dish

i moved my dish last week, just had to push the lnb around cause i was only picking up half the channels but was easy enough for DIY though I suck at drilling holes so looks like first storm dish is probably coming down:cry:

LOL. Why not try robolts. They expand in the hole so they seat much stronger then the screws do.

Got my Dish + TV + decoder up on the roof Saturday morning (wife very concerned!!!). Got zero signal after mounting it. I've put the cable in the wrong connector:erm:

after switching it to the LNB input, I got 75% with no tuning required. moved it a little to the left and got it to max 86%.

It found all the channels. :) to bad the rugby was so bad!!!

Installer had limited time

I think you got screwed. I do Satellite installations for a living and I know that with a perfectly aligned dish the signal quality can not be that low unless there is a problem with the LNB or a cable (doubtful) or the decoder. The other possibility is that the alignment is out because the installer doesn't know what he's doing. What I suggest you do is check the LNB is aligned correctly. The easiest way to do it is to look at the dish and imagine it's a clock, then align the LNB as if it is pointing to 4 o'clock. Then you can check if there is a better signal. There are a lot of chancers in the satellite business and i think the guy just took the money and then laughed at you. I think it's your LNB out of alignment as from what you say in your post is that the signal quality is 98% most of the time, so it's jumping around. That's a symptom of the LNB being out of alignment.

Installer did my installation. After he left, I checked signal strength and quality which was way below 100% - I think about 65%.
I connected my old tv through the extra view port and positioned it where I could see it. By watching signal strenght and quality on the screen I could get both to fluctuating between 98 and 100%.
I spent some time doing that. I doubt if installers will have time to fiddle with it to get 100%.
But in spite of signal just below 100%, the signal often disappears when there is rain to the east. I have wondered why we can not use a satellite above our heads instead of one sitting above India with a lot of atmospheric interference between us and the satellite.

^^ nice thread necro :p

Would there be any installers out Stilbaai side? I have an installation voucher but I dunno if any installers would be living close by.

Does one need to be subscribed to DSTV before the installer (or yourself) does the installation and setup of the dish & decoder?

Of cos not. How will they stop you installing a dish :erm:
Generally you would install everything first anyway, get signal and get channel 100 working, only then call to activate the smartcard and decoder

Wasn't asking will they stop you :p Is channel 100 a test channel? So they use that to "tune" the device?</dstv noob>

Monkey misaligning?

I would love any help I can get. We recently lost our signal and received error code 48-32. We chatted with dstv and put a new decoder on that we already had, with no success. They advised us to get a installer to come and repair. The error code has been there for five days so we know it is not a weather issue. Installers want at least R300 to come and fix a minor issue and possibly more for any major problem. We are pretty convinced that our local monkey troupe misaliagned the dish and we pay for the cheapest dstv package so would like to fix it ourselves if possible...suggestions? This could be ongoing with the monkeys visiting daily so it would be great if we could adjust it ourselves.

My experience with sudden signal loss is sometimes old cable or a poor connector.
Make sure you make a new connection for the F connector if you have a signal issue. It solved my cable issues.
