My project today....

Staff call me upstairs.... on PC, full of dust, rebooting herself, but not getting into boot menu even...

I unplug everything and blow out the unit.... Reseating and cleaning RAM ..

Plug all cables back in, Power last....

Without even pressing power button..... The CPU fan starts rotating, just for a second, then stops...... wait for 3 seconds.... then the PC, all by herself.....starts to boot..... nothing on VDU, she does not get far enough into her bootup and promptly turns off...... I press power button, nothing happens....

I unplug everything , save for Mouse, Monitor and Keyboard..... exact same thing happens....

So i change the PSU (cos' a clever guy at the helpdesk said I should......)

Same thing....

So whilst waiting for Helpdesk experts I thought I would run it by you bored folk out here and see if we can solve this afore' they call....

Is the problem....

1) Motherboard busy going...
2) A faulty power switch....
3) Faulty Ram...
4) A Lose connection...
5) I don't care....

I thank you....in my our of need......

Sometimes it is the simple things that mess you around.....

I unplugged alles....and I mean alles.... same thing....

End of the day..... (first one to laugh, I come and fetch!) ... the actual power button was sticky.....

:erm:

Too much porn?

Could be crashing during boot process. Quite likely RAM is faulty.
Try running Memtest86 on it.

Edit I see the probem was solved.

Should he try run memtest before or after it fails to boot?

Only saw thread now. Well done Moose, you certainly are versatile!

I was about to suggest unplugging the power/reset switch cables from motherboard.
For future ref you unplug the switch cables, then use a small flat tip screwdriver to momentarily short the power switch pins on the motherboard header - these are marked pwr-sw or atx-sw or something similar.

I have a pc at work that we would start by shorting two wires together, highly unprofessional, I also tend to leave the covers off my pc's....
