I asked Telkom about self-install and here is an e-mail response i got:

Marius,

THE self install option is not commercially available to the public as
yet..we are still piloting the processes and procedures .

hmmm -- looks like the right hand again does not know what the left hand is doing .... so what is new.

Typical.
I had techies at my house yesterday, and they didnt even know what the hell the procedure was with the self install.

Sigh.

James "If I ask you for the "Self install package" will it help with the 5 months I have already been waiting (Have been told my line has been verified and I have been allocated a port)".

Telkom "Sorry, Self install is not available in your area"

Go figure

I received a self-install Word document that had these sentences (red font as in document):
"Please call the verification helpdesk at (011) xxx xxxx and inform us of the result of the self Installation and verification test. (Lawrence to supply number to call)."

"If, after phoning the Telkom DSL helpdesk and not being able to install your DSL service, you require assistance from a Telkom technician, this can be arranged but you will be billed with a callout fee of R125.60 (someone, please confirm this)."

So yeah... I am not sure they were really ready to roll out the self-install option...
