Hi,

I have 2 questions -

1. The self-install from Telkom - is there any installation fee?
2. Uncapped accounts from ISPs like Mweb etc - obviously many ports are shaped - BUT: does that mean blocked or slow? And if slow, what sort of speeds could I expect?

Thanks,
Regards

AFAIK there are no costs involved when you do the self-install.

No ports are blocked, but many of them are either badly shaped during the day or its just the high contention ratios resulting in poor speeds. During the day I usually struggle to get more than 20kB/s on my 4Mbps OpenWeb Uncapped account. After 19:00 the speeds are usually acceptable (2Mbps+) and after midnight I usually manage to get full line speed (3.7Mbps). If I was downloading 24/7, then I could've given you nice MRTG graphs of my Internet connection, but I'm not downloading that much.

Same issue here with MWEB. I get bad 4mb speed during the day and only get decent speeds from around 3am till about 6am in the morning. LOL hopefully when people run out of things to download things will come right for everyone.

Thanks guys for the response. The decent speeds you get - is that on any protocal - emule, torrent, rapidshare etc? And the poor speeds - can you give me an indication?

All of my downloads are either streaming videos, FTP or HTTP.
NZB's & Torrents are heavily shaped. During the day you'll be lucky if you get 5kB/s from any NZB server on a 4Mbps line.
