Self Install

SA should go one step further now and do away with the install amount being reduced by having a self install option. Here in the UK we have that and you only pay if you want a technician to come out.
I mean all they need to do is to eneble the line, and then let us do the install.....it is not that difficult.

no u just connect the modem to ur line, and the pots filter to your phone. then u phone them and they convert it at the exchange. thats all there is to adsl installation

Isn't that how it is currently work, you do connect the modem to your line, and put the pots filter yourself on, telkom just lays the cable and go mess at the exchange?

except they get a technician to come out and do that for you, and they charge R404 for it. the link between the premises and the exchange remains unchanged, its the same copper wire thats used for your phone line. so a self install basically means you dont need a techie to come out and install your modem for you.

personally i take it as an insult, its almost as if they questioning my competence by sending a technician out to do such an easy job. its not like it requires a degree in rocket science

well my dad is getting adsl tomorrow i dont think 202 rand is alot for them to install a brand new line do you?

look at iburst they want 2800 rand for a modem made for like 3 $ and then still get kuk service

for ppl who afford to have internet connection that total 700 rand or more a month or even 500 is 400 once off payment that much?

its not so much about who can afford it and who cant. i am of the opinion that there shouldnt have to be that distinction between who can afford adsl and who cant - bottom line is it should be affordable to everyone. and R400 installation just adds to the digital divide.

I also think it's only available if you take a Telkom modem. Bastards are not willing to make it easier for us!

It is definitely news to me. I have been waiting for Telkom to announce it in an advertisement. Is there information on the Telkom website about self install ? What do you need to install ADSL yourself ?

told me to go to one of the customer care centres to obtain an "installation pack"

also that it's been running for about 1-2 months. Obviously wouldnt advertise it because = more money to Telscum

I knew it was coming, but I didn't realise it was already available.

Also if they gave us the option for the self install you should have the ADSL setup in less than a week. Here in the UK we have to wait about 5 days......and as stated it is no rocket science, all they do is activate the line, then you connect your filters up, plug in your modem and you are away........
