Hey guys

I just went to a Telkom Shop to ask whether i cud do the whole self installation thing coz i finally convinced myself DSL is the way to go. They told me that it is a simple process and all i wud need is a router and filters. Luckily i didnt get them yet coz the telkom employee then told me they dont offer the self installation service in my area!!! Apparently they dont have permanent staff at the exchange or something to those ends so they wud have to specially send someone out to do what they are supposed to be doin in the first place!!

First off how can they call self installation their service and surely it isnt my problem that there isnt staff available to change my line at the exchange. Why shud i pay R400 for a techie to come and plug a little filter in my jack wen i can do it for R40. They told me too bad!!! Surely its not my problem that they have to send ppl out to the exchange and sort it out. Isnt that their job??

Has anyone else had this problem with Telkom and did you manage to do self installation or do i have to fork out more cash for nothing???

Sorry if this has been handled before but i jsut cant believe what we have to put up with.

Cheers

there was a similar thread a while ago. if i remember correctly, the outcome was that you could do a self-install.

i think the person just phoned again and spoke to someone else, which allowed him to do the self-install.

Thanks for the quick response. Ill give them a call n find out again. Hopefully ill be gettin DSL soonish (If im lucky).

Cheers

There is an exchange side upgrade required. If nobody is there to do the plug and play side there, no filter in the world will get your line switched from analogue to digital... :)

They will have to send somebody to go and set it up for you. Not only at your home, but at the exchange.

If Telkom is bull****ting you for extra cash it will be hard to prove. 99% of the time they are just full of it. Good luck! Keep us posted!

I did self installation on Feb, and I see the 404 installation on my march statement... still fighting with the telkom thiefs to get my money back...

A friend of mine recently enquired about ADSL and was thrilled to hear that installation is free since the middle of Feb. So he called Telkom to apply for ADSL and then promptly learnt that the self installation only applies if you sign the ADSL contract with Telkom. Well that sucks.

North vs South

I was also refused a self-install. The reason given was that in Cape Town, in the Southern Suburbs you can do a self-install, but not in the Northern Suburbs, as not all the exchanges in the Northern Suburbs support the self-install option.

So, to prevent mass rioting by the non-capable-northern-areas, they enforced a blanket rule that no area in the Northern Suburbs can do a self-install.

btw. line was due to be installed on Wednesday, 15 March ... got a call today to say that (1) there are no more available ports on Bothasig DSLAM ... and (2) the Wifi Router I'm supposed to get for signing a 24-month contract, will arrive seperately from the supplier itself (when that is, nobody knows).

Hi again guys!!

I phoned Telkom yesterday n ordered my line. The whole southern and northern suburbs thing seems a bit lame to me. I stay in the northern suburbs n they didnt seem to have a problem with me gettin the whole self install thing. So hopefully i wont get a big suprise wen i get my bill. Im goin today to get all the stuff from the telkom store. Hopefully with a miracle, much like moses parting the red sea or something, i might be gettin my line soon.

cheers

Tumblweed you know of course that unless you sign a 24 month contract you have to pay the R40 per filter over and above the installation costs. Even if you do a self install you still have to pay the R40 per filter.

I specifically asked the telkom employee if the service charge of R404 wud b added to my phone bill if i did self install and she told me that it wudnt. I really have no issue payin R40 for a filter but it they charge me the R404 i will seriously be pissed off. But like i said we can only w8 and c.

I went the self-installation route. They charged me R177.
I phoned them and they reversed the charge. Seems to me it all depends who's managing your account and who picks up the phone when you complain.

If they charge you per month for the line, why the hell should you pay for someone to flick a switch in the exchange so that they can get to the point where they charge you per month
