Sell me a PC

oh yes, most of the "pro" cards don't have good drivers for Vista yet. But the XP drivers are very good

Thanks, that was a great shock.

16 channel firewire capture card. R7000

lol, that is the problem with a multichannel card. But the cards as mentioned above will be less than R1 500, but one channel only. Therefor you can use the mixer if they do a full demo, but then you can't master the individual channels. Which leaves them to record channel for channel to properly master a track

Yeah, we're going to try with the bog standard jobbie first and then go from there.

Got an option for a 4 channel card upgradeable to to 12 channels for R3300 which isn't too bad.

OK, this is the final spec that I have decided on.

its okay, you missing one thing a sound card/audio interface card, get this one http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?product=9872, its the same one I've got and its amazing its around R1400 -R1600, you need some good speakers too, without a soundcard you'll be wasting your time unfortunately cause the Audio converters on your normal soundcards/creative soundcards were designed for gaming/listening to music, you might as well also throw in another monitor and get a dual view setup, its worth it

and also look at getting cubase / reason /garageband etc, if you need anymore help let me know, I know alot about making music and stuff

Thanks Bondizzo, we're going to stick with this for now and add later depending on what the requirement becomes.

So Cubase is the best app to use?

Cubase is one of many. there's Reason, Cakewalk, ProTools (the industry standard). There are literally hundreds of different packages that you could use, but the main one's are mentioned here.

What is the latest version of Cubase and what price is it?

as far as i know, the new version is Cubase SX4. I don't know where to buy it and how much it costs, but these things are flippin' expensive. a few years ago, i saw an older version of Cubase going for R7500 which some guy advertised. you should probably try genuine music stores like Paul Bothner and ask them if they stock this or where else to buy this.
Most producers use ProTools though.

The best is if you can get demo's of these software as everyone has their own favourite. You need to find something that you like.
