This is a thread on request (Request)

It would be really nice if you guys can contribute how you'd go about this as this thread is indented to be a tutorial of sorts

I am quite knowledgeable of the shopify platform and development thereof so my preferred method would be to use Shopify as a Magazine selling platform

Otherwise I would use Joomag which I have setup in the past to sell e-books and it worked quite well see pricing

Alternatively I would suggest Wordpress + WooCommerce + a payment gateway if you cannot create a theme yourself then it might be worth it to invest in a ready to use theme like this one as it already has woocommerce setup.

If you want a more hands on approach you can use a CMS platform like wordpress to create the website then when someone wants to buy a subscription they must E-mail you the subscription ID/Title/Identifier then you use wave for the recurring billing and sendy to send the encrypted DRM ebooks to the subscribed people.

What would you guys recommend instead?

This is why I stimulated this discussion.
Zinio, and all those, take commissions on your sales on top of a monthly billing fee. Not only that, you're bound to them for support issues.

Additionally, if you want to publish adult magazines, you're out of luck. The local version of Zinio, MySubs.co.za, are pathetic... no customer service, no interest, nothing.

Quick question: what kind of hosting do you need for this? I want to order today so I can start messing around...

Atleast 1 Mysql DB

For a start you can upgrade to something decent later on when this goes into production.

Cheap Cheap afrihost since downtime won't be critical for you in testing.

Then pop over to domains for production and upgrading and downgrading is very easy and quick with dedicated support to assist.
