Hey everyone.
I'm in the process of selling my car, but this is the first time I have ever sold a car so I'm not so sure what to do. Please help with the following:

How do I work out how much my car is worth?
If selling it privately, how do I receive the payment?
Where are the best places to advertise?
Do I need to get the roadworthy certificate?

If anyone has a sort of step by step guide to selling a car. please share!
Thanks

1) Go to a site like autotrader/gumtree/capeads - search for a similar make/model/condition and judge from the hits you see.

2) I don't like to take any chances, so I told the buyer to meet me inside my bank with the money. I was then able to deposit it into my account immediately in a secure environment and never had to have large amounts on me.

3) Gumtree and CapeAds (if you're in CT) worked like charms for me - and free!

4) No. The buyer will need one to change the license into his name, but the onus is on him, not you, to get it.
You could sell him 4 pieces of rubber and an engine and as long as you don't misrepresent yourself in the advert or negotiations - you're all good. It's up to him to get it roadworthied if he wants to use it on the road.

Hope that helps

Good luck with the sale.

In addition to Dean's suggestions, I suggest you get the roadworthy in advance (if you think it will pass). Here in CT you can get it for R150 or so. Once you have the roadworthy you will most likely get a better price since the buyer wouldn't have to worry about it.

like Dean said, to get the cars value simply search on the classfieds sites or get an auto trader. You can try some online book value sites like:

transunion (www.mytransunion.co.za) - you pay R90 for a valuation
www.motorspot.co.za - free online book value calculator
www.book-value.co.za - free online book value calculator

if you serious about finding out the price, dont use a book value calculator, get a real book value

Rise from the ashes thread :) Ok, so have we have any of the car dealers on here verify any of the figures these calculators provide, especially book-value.co.za?

M&M figures are changed every month, so unless that site does the same, it's not going to be much help. What you have to realise as well is that Trade and Retail prices might not necessarily respond to your particular car.

For example, yesterday we offered a chap Trade PLUS 5000 for an immaculate Forester XT with very low mileage. The same car with high mileage and same age might trade for anything up to 30k behind book. In the end it is only the dealer who is buying your car who will give you a price. You can, of course take a chance on Gumtree and depending on model, you can get up to book - remember the guy who is buying from you has also been looking at trade and retail prices and will know if you are taking a chance.

Hope that helps.:)

motorspot is a crap site. just told me a car that i sold recently to a dealer for 40k was worth nothing...or did i just score big with the dealer? ;)

Actually, I have just checked Motorspot with a car that I KNOW the book value according to M&M and it has popped up with a price of R271 965.

ACTUAL book price for that car in immaculate condition is R171 200 so the bloody idiots are valuing a car at 100k OVER book!

How to set yourself up for disappointment!!

GAWD  I've just looked at the other site and it is 150k ABOVE book!

Guys, please don't trust these sites!!!
