I know everyone checks the health - how do I check this ?
Also, guess 1TB and 2TB don't fetch much nowadays ?

So, health on the 1st drive is 4%

Can't fix or repair without registration :(

Can it be fixed ?

There are 13408 bad sectors on the disk surface. The contents of these sectors were moved to the spare area.
The drive found 152 bad sectors during its self test.
There are 152 weak sectors found on the disk surface. They may be remapped any time in the later use of the disk.
More information: https://www.hdsentinel.com/hard_disk_case_weak_sectors.php
6393 errors occurred during data transfer.
In case of sudden system crash, reboot, blue-screen-of-death, inaccessible file(s)/folder(s), it is recommended to verify data and power cables, connections - and if possible try different cables to prevent further problems.
More information: https://www.hdsentinel.com/hard_disk_case_communication_error.php
It is recommended to examine the log of the disk regularly. All new problems found will be logged there.

It is recommended to backup immediately to prevent data loss.

Nope, when a disk shows bad sectors, it's starting to fail. Your best bet is to get data off there ASAP and not use it for anything critical. It's only a matter of time until it will stop working completely.

Thanks -= formatted already (been sitting here since I changed to SS).

So best is to toss in the bin?

Did you do a full or quick format?

If the drive has no physical damage to the platter, the bad sectors could just be logical errors picked up by the drive's ECC firmware, and sometimes repaired by performing a full format of the drive.

A full format will erase each and every sector and re-check for bad sectors if those sectors have read or write errors... If a full format still produces bad sectors, those sectors are physically dead and the drive shouldn't be used anymore.

Use CHKDSK to check for permanent bad sectors after you do a full format;

Quick.

I'll read the link now .

Thanks !

After you've done a full format and run CHKDSK, run HDSentinal again and see if it still reports errors. If it does, the drive is definitely on it's way out.

A brand new 1TB internal drive is only around R500 these days, so not really worth selling second hand for the risk involved.

It's the 2T which I'm having the issues with . I'll toss if I can't get it fixed - I'd never take money it.

The 1TB is rated at 80% or so - but I'll offer to the guys in my area (ie within a few KM). I just need to clear out this place

I'm keen to know what HDSentinal returns after you do the full format routine.

A full format fixed a few drives for me in the past, with no permanent bad sectors reflecting afterwards.

Some drives are known to fail though. I bought 3 x Seagate 1TB 7200.11's back in 2010 and two failed weeks apart. Had to pay almost R9,000 for data recovery one the one drive (company paid though). The 3rd one is still functioning to this day.

The Seagate 7200.11's were notorious for failing early - apparently due to dodgy firmware;

Rumors flying, sensational headlines, dogs and cats living together. Yes, its another apparent rash of hard drive failures -- this one centered on Seagate's spacious 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 drives. Apparently,the problem lies in a faulty firmware found on drives manufactured in Thailand, which causes them to fail before they're even able to boot up and leaves them completely inoperable

FYI, don't offer any guarantee on any hard drive when selling second hand... Provide the HDSentinal report when selling, and leave it at that. Let the buyer know it's voetstoes and not your problem once it leaves your hands.
