400m, line of sight, point to point in the relatively free 5ghz zone, i think he'd be fine.
2.4ghz is crowded, 5ghz, much less so in .za.

2 ubnt's setup as wireless bridge will be pretty much set and forget as people have said.
There are some 5ghz bands that are verboten here, as they're used by official sources. Should be able to configure not to use those.

Lightning is more of an issue considering its JHB..

I'd suggest check if theres a WUG (wireless user group) of sorts near you, you can likely get someone roped in to help for some beers.

I can't remember if ICASA wants a licence or not for point to point (does it cross a public street?, if so yes), suggest check, or ask DJ...
Make sure you buy equipment from Scoop/ Miro or similar, and make sure it has the Icasa stickers so its type licenced for here.
Licencing isn't too onerous, if you want to be safe, setup a ngo or similar, and apply for an exemption, or join your local WUG and fall under theirs..
 
Money no object? Top end solution.

Consider FSO ( Free Space Optic) links. 100 Mbps - 10 Gbps. Interference free.

Redline is a local supplier (Parsec) No licence issues, BUT definitely requires LOS.

No use trying to con the man into installing R10 000+ kit then he only has a 50Mb - 100Mb fibre link, and for office use even a 10Mbps wireless link will be fine. You can even use the cheaper N spec Ubiquity wireless routers and your office will still have a very good experience if you don't want to get the AC Ubiquity ones
 
And every time someone on the build path starts blasting on his channel his link drops or requires reconfiguration? It may work, but without a proper site evaluation and tech that will be suitable, it's nigh on impossible to say for sure...
Ubiquiti equipment has built in site survey applications.

You can just set it to switch between frequencies across a specified range anyway. These things are pretty easy to setup these days and there is a healthy community online that can help with questions.

If you can setup a home wifi router these radios should pose little challenge.

Most of these Ubiquiti devices will do something like 300mbps (about 150mbps up and 150mbps down). That should be enough for a reasonable amount of future-proofing if his fibre line is currently only a 50mbps and price-performance wise there are probably smaller devices one can use (Ubiquiti Locos will probably serve just fine over a mere 400m for lower prices) but the speeds won't change (still 150mbps up and down). I think AirFibre (1gbps transfer) is excessive.

Coupled with the fact that the antennas on those units have a pretty damn tiny broadcast angle (they're really directional), odds are he won't get much noise.

No need for an enterprise class microwave link for such a small solution.

You will need 2 terminals if that is what your question is. It is a link after all controlled on both ends by you.

LOS is always better, but read up on the equipment and see what it has to say. The more accurately you line up the systems, the less interference you are likely to experience and the better the link will perform.

Height? Over 400 m, the lower the better! The lower you place the equipment the less lightning risk you are exposing the equipment to. Best would be against the correct walls under the eaves of the roof on both properties. You could even consider placing indoors IF there are convenient windows available.

Yeah, no.

Never gonna get close to it's maximum throughput over 25km's. Especially not on 5HGz. Good luck with 100Mbps.

25Km also is not particularly that long a distance.

You will need 2. You're creating a point-to-point bridge.

Yea generally need clear line of sight but it depends on what is in the way and atmospheric conditions. Big buildings between the 2 devices can be devastating while trees can be a minor nuisance. It is all relative.

As for height that also depends. The higher up you mount it the better your chances of a clear line of sight. I tend to put a 3m pole on a wall with a bracket and stick the dish on top of that. This depends on what device you purchase. The dishes have brackets that allow you to pole mount while smaller Locos and the like I've seen people just cable-tie to gutters.

I recommend a pole mounted securely to the wall of your house with the ubiquiti dish-style radios. They're usually the best value for money and they give a consistent reliable signal. Their beams are relatively narrow (a few degrees usually) so proper alignment between the 2 radios is important but the Ubiquiti devices have apps to help you with that too.

The AC range come with the plumbing type tightner and a simple pole works.

A green >20mw laser pointer works well for alignment ;) When it gets dusk you can see the LOS

Would the more expensive unit give me a more stable signal ( or faster ) or is it an overkill ?

16dBi vs 25dBi

The higher dBi typically has a narrower angle. So it will have a more powerful signal but also more difficult to line up.

Over 400m, the Nano would be fine. I have a link of about 200m, and I'm getting the full 100Mbps. You could get more, but the model I have only has a 100Mbps Ethernet port.
