Johannesburg - A 49-year-old senior policeman has been gunned down in Esikhawini, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.
Captain Thulani Zwane said Lieutenant Colonel Baleni Joseph Zikhali was shot through an open window in his home while preparing for bed on Tuesday.
"Zikhali was shot in the body and the suspect allegedly climbed through the window and fired (more) shots that fatally wounded him. He sustained several gunshot wounds to the chest and arms," he said.
The man fled with, among other personal belongings, Zikhali's service pistol and a cellphone.
Zwane said a case of murder and armed robbery had been opened and the organised crime unit was investigating.
Zikhali was stationed at the Durban central police station's community service centre.
