Who are they?

My client is a fast moving start-up that provides Internet services and applications aimed at the billions of people in developing markets using mobile phones.
They have a flat management structure and work in small self-managed, self-motivated teams.

What will you do?

You will add high quality, fun, engaging features and content to their product as well as enhance their existing suite of applications. They are eager to hire exceptional software engineers with experience in high traffic environments and large data problems.
They are not looking for web designers or web developers who have purely worked on creating websites. Their applications are focussed on the backend database and data processing, with some work on the frontend based on their platform.
From a development perspective, you will focus on enhancing existing applications as well as designing and developing new features and apps on the platform. Building for scalability and robustness are key requirements.
As a senior member of the team, you will also be required to mentor and lead other new members of the Cape Town development team as they are recruited.
You will have the opportunity to travel overseas, such as to their Sydney headquarters for training and/or project work with their core development team, where required.

Can you apply?

• Matric & tertiary qualification
• 5-10 years’ experience as a Back End Developer
• The ability and experience to lead and/or mentor other developers in the team if required
• Technologies: PHP, Java, Perl, Python, Shell in a backend environment
• Mobile/Web application development, WAP, WML, HTML
• XML, SOAP and JSON
• Architecting and managing robust, secure and scalable systems
• Apache, MySQL, NoSQL, Memcache
• Code frameworks such as CodeIgnitor, Zend, etc.
• Online APIs (Google, Facebook, Wordnik and more)
• Code profiling and benchmarking
• Agile development practices and lean principles
• REL based Linux hosted in the Amazon cloud
• Amazon tools – DynamoDB, RDS, ELB, S3, etc.
• Version control (git - bit bucket)
• Issue / project management (Jira)
• Devopps / sysadmin skills a plus

Their aspirations are big, so this role would especially suit someone that is willing to grow with the task.
Independent thinkers that can identify an opportunity and develop something cool will thrive!
