Hi there

I looking for a Linux friendly (Ethernet) Sentech modem for a client.

Can anybody give me information on cost and sourcing of this?
 
Does it have a webbased interface like the ADSL modems have?

Any idea what the login IP address and username/password is?

Wolfling : No, because the adsl modems with web based interfaces you are thinking of are actually routers with an adsl modem inside. You can just simply use the sentech USB modem with the ethernet cable to connect. Or you can use the USB modem and ethernet cable and connect it to a boradband router and get the same web based interface you want. I have this using the linksys wrt45gl router. But this is only useful if you want to connect multiple computers to the internet
 
Linux + Sentech Modem

Does the Sentech modem work under Linux with PPPoE?

All efforts so far (using Smoothwall) have failed.

We have found Smoothwall works with the iBurst wireless modems (PPPoE), but it doesn't look as if the Sentech modems work the same way.

I found the USB drivers for the modem on the Neology site, but it being smoothwall, it's not really an option.

I could use another distro (pref Ubunutu 6.06) and build the USB drivers to the kernel that way.

BUT is there an EASY way of getting it working under Linux using PPPoE?

A fast response would be greatly appreciated, as long as its a definate yes or no ;-]
 
It definitely works with SmoothWall and PPPoE. I ran it like that for many months.

Thanx for the quick response.

I can only deduce that my problem is hardware related.....

The modem works over USB on Windows (the connection I'm using at the mo) but we cannot test it over PPPoE on this PC - the CD that came with it is missing....

Installed the RASPPPOE drivers manually, and even that cannot find the modem...

We suspect it's the cable then.

Smoothwall reportd a timeout waiting for ?PADO? packets
 
If you're testing PPPoE on a 'doze box and it's XP, you don't need to install anything as XP has it's own integrated PPPoE capability ..all you need do is run the 'New Connection Wizard' and, as appropriate, select [Connect to the Internet] -> [Set up my connection manually] -> [Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password] -> [enter ISP name (I usually use "SENoE")] -> [enter user & pass details] ..that creates the login script.

THEN get properties on it and on the [General] tab you'll see [Service name], at that point enter *99#, OK your way out and go for it.

Yeah, tried exactly that, even set the NIC to BaseT10 Half Duplex as recommended in the user guide, when the normal PPPoE didn't work.

Will be taking that cable to checked now...

I currently have my mywireless modem working via ethernet (PPPOE) with a smoothwall.

No additional software is required. Smoothwall 2.0 has generic PPOE drivers built in.

Have you been able to cross-check?

As in: you know said Eth. port works for normal network action? Also, have you tried that cable on another PC? As to taking the NIC down to other silly settings as mentioned above, I've never EVER done anything like that ..on NICs all the way from the truly ancient 10T with the old BNC connector, through 100Ts on many PCs to 100OTX on the latest boards ..hell, not even on routers or (old) hubs and switches!
