Hi Guys,

Can anybody please be of help. I recently purchased two new upright 64 bit computers. When the Sentech USB modem is plugged into the computers they freeze up.

I spoke to the helpline, who said that they only support 32 bit and there was nothing they could do. It was a common problem and I should buy a LAN cable and try and route via that instead

Has anybody come across this problem or have any ideas on solving the issue

Any help would be appreciated

Andr

quick question before i ramble on... Are you running windows 64 bit version? Or is it a 64bit PC with standard XP (32bit) on it?

32 bit

I am running a new 64 bit computer with Windows 32 bit installed on it. All patches updated etc. Does this help

Hmm. I have the same setup. I am running normal XP on an AMD64bit platform. There *should* not be a problem and it should run fine. My guess would be perhaps an incompatibility between the hardward and you motherboard.

You could fiddle for a while to get it sorted out, but best bet would be to get an ethernet cable and plug your modem into the hub or if you are using a crossover between the two PC's, then get another network card installed into one of them and use this to plug the modem into.

Have you tried the modem on both PC's?

Problems

I have tried the modem on both computers and both freeze up once the modem is plugged in. The interesting thing is that they will sometimes freeze up instantly and at other times you can surf for hours.

The computer froze up 5 times in a row now everytime it loged in or when running more than one application that requires internet eg surfing and download manager.

Freezes up constantly when a torrent client runs - I am currently running UTORRENT.

Any help please or I woudl have to sell the computer:mad:

hypn.
your best and easiest solution is to use an ethernet cable.
Buy a network card (about R50) and install it in one of the PC's. Set the IP address to the same range as you currently use. Plug in the modem. (reboot the modem once plugged in. NB)

Create a new connection. Select the PPPoE option. use the same name and password. Share this connection. that should be it! PM me if you need more help

Thanks

Thanks again for the help guys, The network card seems to be the route to go, I will give it a try

Upright computers, eh? That could be a problem. Try lying them on their sides. What happens is that because there are 64 instructions, in an upright configuration the CPU is vertical, and the extra 32 instructions fall out the side of the CPU. If you lie the PC down, the CPU is now horizontal, and the overflowing instructions get stuck in the heatsink and don't fall out.

Yes but be careful of turning it upside down because then all the bits fall out and then you basically have to buy a new processor which with these new 64bit ones is bloody expensive. Those bits can bite...

Had the same funny problem when i upgrade cpu to dual core AMD.... Would run fine then just hang... Worked perfectly on previous 64bit AMD..

Solution.... unplug sentech modem and system has never hung since... Now sentech runs on old old pc used as an ICS box now..

So beware, something funny with modem and X2's i found
