SENTECH: OFFICIAL APOLOGY TO MYWIRELESS CUSTOMERS

Dear Customer

Please be informed that we are aware that certain information contained in our MyWireless customer database was inadvertently e-mailed to a small number of MyWireless customers on Saturday, 24 July 2004. We confirm that the database only contained the customer’s name, contact number, physical address and e-mail address.

Please understand that the database was sent out through human error as an attachment. Steps to withdraw and delete the e-mail were taken immediately via telephone.

Sentech regrets the incident, apologises for the error and would like to assure you, our valued customer, that we have taken the necessary corrective measures and actions to ensure that this type of error does not occur again in the future.

We trust that you will continue supporting Sentech and its products, in shaping the landscape of our telecommunications industry.

Yours sincerely,

Maureen Mphatsoe
Portfolio Manager: Public and Media Relations

Pass the pringles please ....

We confirm that the database only contained the customer’s name, contact number, physical address and e-mail address.

Exactly what I thought. Releasing their customers name is serious enough. But when it comes to phone numbers and physical addresses. That is a big deal.

I wonder why it took them this long to compile such a short email. I also wonder if Maureen Mphatsoe would be happy if we sent her personal details to 2000 people.

Anyway, just glad they finally admitted their BIG BOO BOO.

But still no apology for leaving their proxy open to the whole planet while falsely accusing their own customers of using the bandwidth? A grudging apology for a security breach one day later doesn't really do it for me. They owe us a blanket apology for their entire bad service over the last months.

umm...you are bound for 24 months to Sentech (unless you cancel) to see if they shape up to what they advertise.

No, the list wasn't sent to 2000 people, there are apparently about that many people on the list.

No, It contained details of just over 2000 people the group it went out to was very small.
A little saving grace on their side, the export to this spreadsheet was very shoddy, allowing 10 digits for phone numbers, so numbers on their list should take the form 11xxxyyyy (for JHB), but mine and many others appear 011-xxx-yy.
In other words, their spreadsheet hacked off the end of many of their contact numbers.

Is it just me or does it seem odd that a mere "Portfolio Manager: Public and Media Relations" is apologising for such a major blunder? If it was my company then the top dog would be apologising to the loyal customer base as a sign of his commitment!

They could have simply not acknowledged it, like they have done with everything else...

Telkom needs a leash, ICASA needs some guts, and the SA consumer needs to make it happen

True, but they obviously do realise just how serious this is, so they are trying to cover their tracks. At the same time trying to make it seem less serious than it actually is. They're not fooling anyone though.

I wonder if they intend on emailing it out to everyone or if they are simply going to leave it on their message board? If it's just placed on the message board 95% of their users won't ever see it.

That's probably the idea, they probably don't want the other customers to know 'unnecessarily'. But it's their personal info, don't they have a right to know? That post has only 154 views, so you can be sure only a small percentage of customers can have read it.

btw,

you saw that the employee only sent out 80 people , making the mistake 80 times.

in this case, incompentance helped because thank the lord this guy didnt know what a mail merge was, or it would have been sent out to 2000 people in 1 minute [:D]

I wonder if he is still a Sentech employee. We know they are sensitive about their employees (ProAsm..) but they have not said anything about the employee (except for saying it was a call centre "orc" and there are only what 20 max of them..)
