Hi all,

I'm planning getting a new contract, since my last one was wrong, sometime this weekend. Then hopefully have my 128Kb connection in a few weeks.

I was just wondering about the modem, I'm getting the USB one, that means it connects to your PC using a USB cable supplied with it right? What is this Ethernet cable I see lots of people talking about? Is it just a basic straigh through network cable? Or is it special?

Also if I fax the contract through on say Monday next week, approx. how long do you think it will take for me to get my modem?

Yes- you get a USB cable with the modem. But even that is not a standard cable. Special on the side that it plugs into the modem, and USB on the other side. The ethernet cable just has a RJ45 on the USB side.

i have the cable, how do you setup so the modem works with the ethernet cable?

So the Ethernet cable has a RJ-45 on one side and a USB to connect to the modem the other side? Is that right?

Whats the difference between this and the USB cable? Also where would I get one and how much are they, and how long?

Um no the other side of the cable is not USB or a connector of a USB I have ever seen though I'm not exactly sure how to describe it except it looks allot like the New serial hard drive power cable very thin but about as wide as a USB connector.I hope that helps

Here is more or less what I did to get it working under Linux. Have not done it under Windows, but it should be something similar...

- one time Linux firewall
- one NIC for my internal LAN
- add another NIC. Do not configure it with any IP address
details. Just make sure that you can do: "ifconfig eth1"
... drive over to fastcomm and buy the ethernet cable...
- download a PPPoE implementation. I use:

- compile and install it.
- run adsl-setup and answer all the questions
- switch the modem off
- connect ethernet cable
- switch modem on
- run adsl-start
- start browsing... ;-)

Both cables have the same connector on the side that plugs into the modem. (reminds me of the connector you find on Motorola cellphones...) Then the one cable is USB on the other side, and the other cable is RJ45.

It is about 2m long.

Ok I get it now.

What advantages are there of using the Ethernet over the USB tho?

Now can anyone give me an estimated time from when I fax the contract to when I should expect delivery?

Hi Noone,

Run the install CD again... somewhere during the install it gives you the option to choose between USB/Serial/Ethernet. There is also a PPPoE client n the CD itself. You should be able to find other Win32 PPPoE clients of the net.

But as far as I know XP has PPPoE builtin:
