Johannesburg, 22 January 2004] - After almost two months of beta testing, Sentech quietly launched its MyWireless fixed-cost wireless broadband Internet service on Monday, making deadline. But the company admits it is not covering the whole of Gauteng yet, and users have questioned its acceptable use policy (AUP).
Maureen Mphatsoe, Sentech senior manager of external communications, says nine base stations were up and running by Wednesday. They are in Honeydew, Brixton, Randburg, Helderkruin, Linksfield, Hurleyvale, Northcliff, Killarney and Marlboro.
Those interested in MyWireless should check that the area in which they want to access it is among these. Mphatsoe adds that even if users reside in one of these suburbs, coverage of a specific street address must be checked using the zone locator on the Sentech Web site.
Credit vetting is done online, and after signing the contract, qualifying applicants can expect their modem and the rest of the MyWireless kit delivered to them within three days.
Some early queries
Postings on the IOZ discussion list raised concerns about bandwidth restrictions on this service. Mphatsoe makes it plain that any possible bandwidth restriction won't happen on the basis of a certain amount of data having been downloaded, as has been reported with Telkom's ADSL service.
Still, Sentech's UAP on MyWireless raised eyebrows. One prospective user said the UAP, which warns users that “excessive use” in the form of high Web site traffic, FTP downloads, resale of bandwidth and others could result in a negative impact on other users.
In its sole discretion, Sentech may determine excessive use, and terminate the service, upgrade the package or restrict bandwidth. This, however, does not entail a usage cap, Mphatsoe adds.
What's available
MyWireless comes in three flavours: 128Kbps (R649 a month), 256Kbps (R849) and 512Kbps (R1 499), all on a shared bandwidth platform, including access and modem. Prices include VAT but not a once-off activation fee of R500 (including VAT) or delivery of the modem.
