Hey

can someone explain to me why the wireless modems are so expensive? who dictates the prices is it Sentech / nowire / fastcomm?

I tried to find out and I phoned around, I phoned all three companies and no one could give me an answer.

I mean if you check the ipwireless website under providers http://www.ipwireless.com/subscriber/providers.html or you simply do a google search on p1d or p1c you will soon find out that these modems go for around R800-R1200 (retail!) depending on the country and provider.

This is an unacceptable rip off on behalf of the mywireless companies. The only explaination for these high prices that I was given was "Well, you see it is expensive to import modems into south africa". Well isnt it also expensive to import them into New Zealand where the modem goes for R860????

Given South Africas rip off prices and the extra mods that they have to do on the modems, none of the modems should go for more than R1600.

After all they are ripping us off enough. Just for example, a 100k connection in Nigeria (no CAP!!!) using the same technology costs R 290 (we pay R500 for a 128k with a 10GB cap!!) . Now thats in NIGERIA!!!! http://www.netcomng.com/product_Mynetcom3.php

I am sick and tired of beign ripped off. I want a clear and nice explaination by the heads of all three companies Sentech / nowire / fastcomm why the prices (both modem and subscription) in SA are more than anywhere in the world!!!

Even worse is when you have to fork out a an extra grand or 2 for an additional antennae, to pick up a stronger signal, which is probably bouncing of the hill behind your house. If you ask me, stay away from Wireless for now, especially if you live in an area with lots of trees and hills etc. Your Signal and service will just be crap. On the other hand, a friend of mine just seems to be in the right position in relation to the tower, and he loves the service (besides the periodic phone calls when he goes over 20+/- Gigs downloads)

imo, the only reason these modems are so expensive is b/c that's where the resellers and their agents make their money. (hence my dislike for resellers).
when i signed up for MyWi, it was quite clear to me that the salesguy was almost forcing me to buy the modem via him. Probably earned him an extra R1000 to R1500.
At the time i accepted it b/c there was still some goodwill in me left regarding startup 'broadband' companies, but that's gone now.
Surely it must be against competition rules not to allow people their free choice of modems?

Fastcomm are the sole importers and distributors for all IPWireless products in Southern Africa.
NoWire is the retail outlet of Fastcomm.
Sentech is purely one of Fastcomm's customers.
