Hi Guys,

I was browsing around and found that sentech updated their site.
www.sentech.co.za

Check it out because they have info on Mywireless! Pricing are also available :)

MyWireless 128 R 649,00/ month* 24 Month contract
MyWireless 256 R 849,00/ month* 24 Month contract
MyWireless 512 R 1449,00/ month* 24 Month contract

All the above includes Internet access and the wireless modem (USB or PCMCIA)

Before you get too happy:

Contention ratios not stated.

Nothing said about fixed IP

No info on initial coverage and coverage expansion

How many e-mail accounts are included or do you have to purchase that separately?

Compensation for no service

Service Level agreement is absent.

Most propably still a lot more missing :-)

South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.

I agree with kaspaas...

It's about time that service providers realise that we are not stupid users anymore that are totally driven by pricing and fancy marketingspeak.

We WILL ask about contention ratio's, IP allocations, SLA etc etc in order to be able to compare apples with apples.

On that note we should probaly create a comparison matrix somewhere on MyADSL where we compare providers at a product offering level (e.g. Tiscali dialup vs MWEB vs etc etc). The only problem is keeping the matrix current - a dated comparison would be rather useless to users.

At a glance this looks great!!! Maybe telkoms rule of terror is coming to a grinding halt...however the 24 month contract is awful!! in the next 2 years alot of changes are probably going to happen like SNO for example. To be 'stuck' at this price when/if everything else gets cheaper or new options come out will not be fun.

Well I called them and belive it or not they were friendly and seemed to know what their talking about it was a lady and she even offered to take my questions and phone me on monday with the answers I feel so loved :) Anyway I took the questions set by Kaspaas and I'll know by monday I also asked if they have garantees on bandwidth. I suggest you call them. Will have more on Monday :)

Hey, the prices looks good, but I'm a bit dissapointed with the 24-month contract deal.

Why can't they just sell me the modem upfront, or let me pay it off over 3 or 6 or 12 months? I see no logical reason why this couldn't be an option.

The fact that Sentech wants to lock their customers in for such a long time worries me. Either they aren't confident that their product is good as they say, or they want to grab as much as they can before the SNO becomes operational? Sounds way too Telkom-ish.

I was really looking forward to see what they have to offer, and I definitely don't want to give my hard-earned money to Telkom, but there's absolutely NO WAY I'm gonna sign up for 24 months.

I want to be able to buy my own modem, and cancel my service at any time if its crappy.

Amen, brother.

Lo all.

I gave Sentech a ring today... They were pretty friendly, and knew what they were talking about, except for this:

quote:

MyWireless is available directly from Sentech, or through selected Sentech Partners

Maybe the technie and I weren't on the same wave length, but he didn't seem to know about this.

I have a suspision that these "Selected Sentech Partners" might have different packages, e.g No contracts, etc. - As I said, just a suspision Do not quote it!

The next few months are going to be very interesting...

So - if sentech can offer this 128k service for R650 a month - unlimited download - and including the modem - then how much does bandwidth really cost? I can download a good couple of Gig per month with a 128k 24/7 connection.

Come-on Telkom - play open cards with us

Its a 155mb ring so work out the contention from there, practical results may vary with BGP routing etc.

Sentech's pricing model sucks. Just do the maths. The modem costs about R4,000 divide by 24 which is about R330-00 p/m. So on the surface the price is about half of what Telkom charges were you to have have been allowed to buy your own modem. Or, are they making money out of modems!! Does anyone know the price of these types of modems on the open market. Sentech's pricing is suspiciously close to Telscums monthly charge. Methinks this is another Cell C joke where the cost of calls never really came down at a day to day level. Gimmicks and freebies are not ultimately in anyone's favour. A low stable price is what counts with a superior service.

I agree with others in the forum who have a wait and see attitude. Yes, they are friendlier, but price is a real factor for many people just out of school who will ultimately be forced to become some sort of entrepreneur who needs 24/7 lines to make a living.

Scuse me folks, but my maths was wrong. Modem comes to about R166 per month which definitely makes their entry level price/ package look suspiciously like Telkom/Telscum/Helskum's pricing. There is no real justification to use a cell phone service provider pricing model which simply reinforces a cartel system that is government sanctioned!
Anyone seen any service provider lately in the telecoms field that has made prices drop and service sky rocket?

jeffs, what are you talking about?
Sentech are offering an UNCAPPED service with a STATIC IP.
I dont see telskum offering anything close to that? Sure Telkom's 512kbps package me be cheaper than Sentech's...but with a 3gb cap, you're gonna be downloading a lot less than you would with a permanent, uncapped 128kbps account!
I think this is a step forward in the right direction
Now how's about you do the math mate.

The Sentech offering is so close to Telkom's that Telkom does'nt have to fear a major run from ADSL provided they make a few changes:

Raise the cap and the capped speeds
Provide a static IP

And give a decent SLA.

Be transparent on issues such as contention ratios and bandwidth profiling/port priorities.

South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.

I was very much ready to jump ship to Sentech, But unfortunately i am not going to sign up for a 24 month Contract. Guess ill have to wait for the SNO to make the real difference :(

Sentech's offer sounds good but I think the 24months is turning it into crap. I won't sign up for 24 months. Maybe 12 but 24 is really pushing it - maybe they'll come down to earth later on.

That bloody cap...

A 24-month contract is really unheard of! Especially for a company this new to us, trying something new as well. I would be far too scared to invest the next 2 years of my internet use into such a brand new venture.

That's my opinion anyways

Anyone know what this once-off R500 activation fee all about?

Are they charging us R500 to set up a username and password?

I am not convinced about the Sentech offering, I still think paying R649 a month for 128k is a total rip-off. I'll pay that money for 1Mb yeah, but not 128k. Still waiting for the ideal broadband solution and btw, I don't consider 128k as broadband at all. You cannot even stream high quality video over 128k!

We can all hope and wait 'eh?

One day you'll wake up and realise that you live in a 3rd world country, operated by an almost communist government.

By the same token, do you expect Telkom to offer you 128k ISDN 24/7 for R649 anytime soon?

No wonder this country is in a mess. We FINALLY get something worth paying money for, and before its even released you people are shooting it down.
