Sentech will be launching the following products during the end of this year.

512/128 50:1 contention
512/128 20:1 contention
1mbps/256 50:1 contention
1mbps/256 20:1
2mbps/512 20:1
1mbps dedicated
2mbps dedicated

The first option will be below the cost of adsl, and the rest still to be decided upon.

I have seen maps of where they will be implementing at first.

Most of JHB, PTA, Cape town and durban will be covered initially.

Can't wait. Bye-bye adsl.

Hi,

Can we get anyone from Sentech to give more details on their broadband service which will be lauched. Im sure if they do some advertising they will get tons of subscribers applying before the service is launched.

I can imagine the look on Whites face now!

What I want to know is are they going to offer a Service Level Agreement with their products?

If so:
1. What is the uptime (service availability) gaurantee in %?
1. What is the throughput gaurantee (local & international) in Kbps?
2. What is the latency gaurantee (local & international) in ms?

If there is no SLA then I assume it is going to be a "best effort" service.

On the other hand it's competition to Telkom and I'm sure they will get a good uptake....

Lo all.

I am not a 100% on this the Sentech thing. Maybe someone could help me out. Sentech provides wireless solutions, right? Does this then mean that I am going to need a Satellite dish, or just a wireless card?

Do you think it is worth holding out for this? I am not a serious gamer, so pings aren't the be all and end all, but I do spend a lot of time on the net.

I'll be really sceptical about Sentech at first, but if it's a better deal than ADSL I will go for it hands down - (making the investment)

Everybody has different needs, but the main thing that bothers me about ADSL is the CAP, port prioritization and speed during peak times. If ADSL were at least the speed of a 56k modem at peak times I would not complain. (Maybe it's only me?) - During the day the international link seems to be really, really slow - slower than a 56k modem.

I'd even say that permanent 64kbs would be good, but it just needs to be constant. Not dead during the day like ADSL.

50-1???, well if i had a 256/512 and i was sharing with all these interested people at that ratio... hmmm i would be on 5.12/10.24. Isnt that very slow?

If you have a look at the international products, 50-1 seems to be a common ration.

Keep in mind that it will happen very seldom that all the users will require their share at the same time. Businesses operate when home users work etc. Gamers play when others sleep [:D]

So it does not seem out of the norms to have a 50-1 contention ration for home users.

Yeah I must agree with Kaspaas. I have used the overseas products and 50:1 was the ratio and I never had problems with speed.

Does anyone know what type of wireless Sentech plans to use? Is it WiMax (802.16a)? I can't see how they would be able to do a suburban rollout with 802.11b because the range is too short.

Hi,

If they are going to be cheaper then its worth a shot becauase i doubt that we can get any worse service than ADSL.
