For those who don't know what Usenet is, it is basically a massive global forum (think MyADSL on steriods) where just about any topic of interest you can imagine is covered. For a lot of people access to news groups is just as important as access to e-mail.

Giganews is much better I found. 10 GB for $12 a month. I've been a member for a very long time. I mostly use my ISP's server, but they are always incomplete and I need "fills" from my Giganews subscription.

I'm with PURE on this one. I have been with EasyNews for a couple months now, and even although I can use IS news servers, they are not worth nothing compared to EasyNews.
Their retentions are EXCELLENT for both text AND binaries, and they have a huge number of topics (round 230,000 I think).
With 64k ISDN, I am downloading at a constant 7.5KB, which is almost full bandwidth.
If you are serious about Usenet, then I can definately recommend them. (no affiliation)

It's likely you were one of IS's 2nd tier ISP's that IS make their news server avaialble to.

I would love to read my favourite newsgroups - and Google Groups just doesn't cut it. I have a private login to a news server in Germany, but it's tediously slow to download a couple of thousand messages from high-traffic groups per day.

I would still recommend ANYTHING other than Outlook Express for news, be it for text or binaries.

Outlook Express really sux at being a news reader. There is a free version of Agent, aptly named FreeAgent []

I know few ISP's that bother really maintaining an NNTP server, besides that, why would they need to?

I agree Xnews is the best reader. I switched to it after NewsX was discontinued as it had the closest functionality and haven't looked back. Best of all it's free []
