Sentimental clutter - do you have it?

It is entirely noble. Do you expect him to spend some more monies to get rid of his second hand goods ? That is crazy.

We usually get rid of stuff by giving it to trash pickers on Monday which is pikitup collection day. Principle is same - I don't want to spend more monies in getting rid of items and if someone can take it off my hands at no cost to me, great. Times are hard. Some things like toys get sold on FB and son gets monies.
My joke was with reference to getting people to pick up your trash for free..

I've got a ±400 page book about the Cape Town Highlanders from 1885+ from my grandfather. He is probably mentioned in the book if you're into that stuff.

Thanks, I'll check it out, I am sure he is mentioned as he was the first Commanding Officer of the regiment.

We never sell anything. That R1000 - R2000 I may make when selling stuff will probably not have a significant impact on our lives, but could have a big effect on those receiving. When my mom passed away, we donated most of her stuff to an old age home or shelters for those in need.

When we buy something big like e.g. a fridge or living/dining room set, we ask the delivery people if they want the old items for free. That saves us the trouble of trying to get rid of the items.
We had a couple that we have known for years who have fallen on hard times come in to cart things away. Paid them for their labours and fed them for the time. Loaded up a small Sevenseas container with stuff we wanted to hang onto.
Got a message from them when we arrived back home on Saturday, pic of smiling kids in a trolley, as they were able to buy groceries for the first time in a while.

To answer OPs question. Yes I’m sentimental, but I’m also realistic about what is worth hanging onto and what is not. Things will weigh you down and the dead don’t feel disrespected about what you value or not.

I see people keep talking about photos of the object. I am weird like that, but the photo is piece of plastic. IF I have the object I can hold it, smell it look at it better than any photo, and the memories can hit me.
Example, i have photos of my dad, been away now for 25 years. Photo does little to nothing. but his badges is something physical to hold. and then i have a nail clipping, a small sliver. But it is part of my dad. I hold that, or even just see it, the tears still come, after 25 years. memories, stuff we did.
His patch leather jacket though, my wife wants to burn it.

If it's something you know you want to keep you'll already know.

After many years of "I might need that someday" I just stripped my m0er before I moved and dumped everything into a heap in the back-yard. Got a truck to cart it away and have never looked back. I'm no hoarder, but growing up armgat made me too lenient to keep stuff around.

Usually it's the case that within two weeks you'll need something small you threw away, but keeping tons of crap around just for that is never worth it.
I'm sure we've all met or heard of people who'd pay thousands each year to rent storage for junk that's worth nothing.

After the first clean-up session a while back, I'm now aiming to do another one this summer and I'll be even more full of crap about what to keep. If it hasn't been touched in months, it goes out the door.
