Hi All,

I currently (pre-ADSL) have two telephone lines. One for Internet and other one for phone calls. From what I understand when u get ADSL you can share the line between data and voice. BUT the catch is that you still pay line rental (R81) for you voice part of the line.

If this is the case would it not be wiser for me to still keep two lines (As I have already payed for installation) and use one for ADSL (this would save having to put 3mil filters/stoppers, etc on the ADSL line) and the other once for voice ... With my limited tech knowledge it would seem that an unshared ADSL line would be more reliable (I mean less errors and disconnects, not higher sppeeds) then a shared one ...

Anybody got any views on this ?

well that is not so easy as telskum puts the "voice" signal on the line irespective so canceling one line (if was only used for dialup) IMHO is the thing todo ... the filter is honestly plug and play so dont concern yourself ...

Ok but do I have to pay my rental fee for the voice signal ?
ie: is it R450 (384k) for ADSL + R82 for line if I only have the adsl line .. or is the R82 included in my R450 ?

if I have to pay the Extra R82 ... then I'd rather keep 2 lines and keep everything separate ...

You will pay the R82 regardless.
If you actually have one line to your house (ie. a single phone number), and have then split them using extension cords, then there's no point disconnecting one.

If you have 2 lines into your home (ie. 2 seperate phone numbers), then you will be paying R82 for each one + the ADSL line rental.

So in that case cancel the one line and save R82 pm, since you can receive voice calls and surf through one line simultaneously.

you have to add the ADSL to a existing phone line ... so that means 450 in addition to the 82 ... regardless ... and a filter will be required to improve performance without it you will have worse performance

The R82 or whatever is included. So effectively, for your R450 you get an ADSL line and Voice line. No quetion no choice.

Also the voice bit really has no effect on the reliability etc of the ADSL bit. ADSL uses totally different frequencis for tranmission. The only disadvantage is if you don't want a phone line at all or want an ISDN phone line.

Hmm evryone seems to disagree with me on the inclusion of voice line in the price. I'm sure I am right though. I will check my phone bill though.

Installation = R 404
Monthly:
R 449 + R 82 for the line.
R 249 for Telkom ISP
= 780 per month. Notice the nice round figure.
Drop the other line, it is not an advantage, you have to pay for the filter anyway (incl in the 404).

Actaully you ONLY get the filters if you take their modems ... or that is my understanding from 2 prior installations I've done.

You can buy the filters individually from Telkom - of course ;-)(

i just confirmed .. the voice line facility is there included in the adsl BUT to have it activated you have to pay R82 like normal line rental

mmm try and install adsl without paying the 82 rand ... i had to first install a line and then ADSL
