My girlfriend is thinking of buying a Series 3 apple watch, her worry is for how long will it keep on getting updates?

Series 3 is fairly new, so she shouldn't be too worried. They still sell it at the iStore so that indicates it probably still should get updates for a while.

On reddit some users complain that after updating to watchOS6 it has been a bit sluggish

Don’t be to worried about that. Software update wil sort that out. Series 3 still a bang for your buck. Watch the space come end of November (Black Friday) for specials.

So I am busy looking at this at the moment (I have had a Series 1 for 3+ years now, and it still works fine albeit a bit slowly).

For me a big benefit of a series 4, over the series 3, is the ECG - there is also the bigger screen and faster processor but these are less important to me. It seems the ECG is not available in SA yet!? So for me there is no point shelling out for a series 4 or 5. The series 3 brings GPS and some other meters and a better optical heartrate and should last a while until the battery becomes the Achilles heal.

Deal of the day

I got my series 3 in December 2017 and it still works fine, updated it about a month ago to WatchOS 6 and I haven't noticed any issues, I use it for Golf (Golfshot app), running (Nike run app), Spotify, and in general for counting my daily steps and Whatsapp messages

Might be a long time before it is available. Because it is classified as a medical device they have to get the relevant approval. That's why the feature is not available in most countries.
