Hi guys,

I need some help from the security experts please - specifically phone security.

As a note: there's a lot more to this situation and obvious legal/protective steps to take and those are being taken. I really just need help with this specific issue please - and please keep troll and unnecessary comments out of this one.

I have a friend who is having a tough time in her marriage, specifically minor physical and serious emotional abuse. She wants and needs to get out of the marriage and that is happening step by step.

However, her husband has cloned her phone (both Androids) and so can see all texts, Whatsapps, call logs etc.

I need help identifying and removing this so she can have some privacy back. I don't have access to the phone - potentially could arrage it possibly. However, I wouldn't know where to start, short of googling app names until one of them strikes me as odd or suspicious.

So, if you have any idea of what app would do this, or how to remove it, please let me know - in PM is fine if you'd rather not disclose here.

Other solutions I though of would be to backup any docs, chat histories, SMS etc and then factory reset the phone. I don't know if this is possibly a rooted device and the cling is part of that, or if it's simply an app running on the phone.

Any advice on the above would be highly appreciated.

Whatsapp multi user you could see things real time on a desktop, web interface, but thats easy enough to disable. Clone a phone meaning copy from a to b exists which aids people when buying a new unit. This typically involves a push, pull synchronisation so would need to be done manually every so often using the original. Cloning like in the movies where you see and hear everything real time is hardcore and not sure the average joe has that sophistication. Way beyond my paygrade as there are multiple security issues to bypass, so maybe its not as complex as you think.

Get a new phone, with a new number, and keep the cloned one as is.
@UrBaN963 Just adding the new device should be isolated and not any use of the existing services.
For example Google will fire off an email to recovery accounts on a new sign.

If in doubt assume the worst, that the microphone/camera/location is active.
If you handle the old device, that’s it’s logging any changes in available Wi-Fi/Bluetooth devices even if not connected.

Thank you for the advice everyone. I'll have a chat and see what's possible and what she's willing to do.

What are you talking about? This can be done using "my phone" in windows as presumably he has physical access to the phone to have allowed the permissions.

Whatever you do if he still has access to the phone he'll undo it and likely beat the **** out of her.

The only way out of an abusive relationship is OUT, not step by step.

Send location, we'll have a chat with him
Already have a couple chats lined up in future once she's safe.

Correct you are, and that is the plan. Unfortunately, victims of abuse often find it hard to leave out of fear and whatnot. Also the kids complicate things.

start fresh on pc
delete all the partitions on all the drives, format etc.
new full copy of Windows

factory reset phone
new sim card (99c) rica done etc. (new number no porting of old number)
new passwords on all email / social media accounts / or just delete them all
give out new number / email only to close friends and family you trust

change all passwords on home wifi / network etc
enable 2FA on all accounts that offer it

cook a nice meal with a touch of ricin for him, if you need recipes please let don't hesitate

Apologies I do not know the program. So it allows you to auto sync the phone to a software version and there you can see call logs, SMS and whatsapp conversations? There are a number of security features and encryption being bypassed here as whatsapp alone the only way I know how to view conversations is with the multi user which like I mentioned is very simple to disable. If somebody has permanent access to clone a device and reauthorise whatsapp multi user its a moot point as they can simply see whatever they want on the physical device and there would be no need to ask for advice to an IT solution
