"A server running sql" is pretty much meaningless.

A good start would be what O/S the server is running, along with which database - here I'm presuming that the RDBMS is on the same server.

apologies

windows server 2012r2 physical machine, with ms sql, pastel evolution database

Where do you want to back up to?

Bacula is a fully fledged open source backup solution, but you will preferably need to be running Linux on the target destination.

You can check out Veeam Endpoint Backup. RC has just been released. It's looking very good and is completely free. It's built on Veeam Backup and Replication so should be able to backup MSSQL and restore it to a consistent state (You should of course test a restore).

We've done some testing on the Beta and managed to backup a physical Windows 2008 R2 server and restore it in a VM without any issues. Currently waiting for final release to test the integration with Veeam B&R.
